Belial

Lord of Lies

Deceptive Summoner who obscures the truth from his enemies and throws them into utter disarray

Designed as an alternative to Abathur, with absurdly high levels of utility, decent waveclear, and a huge global soak presence

Excels against Valeera, Chromie, and Kharazim

Works well with Dehaka, Brightwing, and Cho'gall

Struggles against Uther, Diablo, and Zeratul

Favors Garden of Terror, Sky Temple, and Warhead Junction

Damage: 6/10
Survivability: 7/10
Utility: 10/10
Difficulty: 10/10

Combat Trait

1
Cloak and Dagger
Mana: 50
Cooldown: 15 seconds (cooldown starts when Deceiver dies)
Summons a Deceiver at the target location that disguises itself as the desired allied hero. Deceivers act as an Adept AI of the chosen hero, preferring lane minions to enemy heroes and refusing to retreat to a Healing Fountain.

Deceivers in a heroic form do not have access to the Trait of the chosen hero or any Talents chosen by that hero's player. If a Deceiver takes damage, it immediately regains its true form and stalks the nearest enemy hero until it dies, attacking for 46(+4%) damage every half-second. Deceivers have 847(+4%) health, and soak experience at 50% efficiency compared to real heroes, but only while in their heroic form.

You can use this ability while Possessing a unit.

Primary Abilities

1
Obscuring Swarm
Mana: 45
Cooldown: 6 seconds
Send out a piercing swarm of flies, which does 155(+4%) damage to enemy units it passes through and causes affected units to no longer grant vision to the enemy team for 4 seconds.
2
Meteor Strike
Mana: 55
Cooldown: 13 seconds
Channel for up to 2 seconds, sending down a total of three waves of meteors within the target area over the duration. Each wave deals 172(+4%) damage to all targets within the area. Also knocks targets 3.5 distance units away from the center with each wave.
3
Possession
Mana: 60
Cooldown: 18 seconds (Cooldown starts upon emerging)
Become Invulnerable, Unrevealable, lose all collision capabilities, and leash yourself to the target ally or enemy unit or Hero. If you use another ability while Possessing a unit, you immediately reemerge in order to cast it. Allied Heroes that you Possess are made aware of being Possessed, while enemy Heroes are not.

If your target dies while you are Possessing them, you take 40% of your health in damage and are stunned for 1 second, but you can Possess a unit indefinitely. While Possessing a unit, you have 50% reduced vision and neither your Health nor Mana regenerate.

If Possession is off cooldown, it is placed on a 0.6 second cooldown after you take damage from any source.

Secondary Abilities

1
Veiled Sentinel
Cooldown: 50 seconds
Places a Veiled Sentinel at the target location, granting vision and revealing a large area around it for 45 seconds. This Sentinel cannot be hidden and is killed by enemies with 2 Basic Attacks.
2
Moment of Truth
Cooldown: 70 seconds
Activate to teleport to the closest Deceiver currently active on the map and force them into their true form.

Passive: Cloak and Dagger now stores 2 charges.

Heroic Abilities

1
Petty Illusions
Mana: 85
Cooldown: 75 seconds
Activate to mask your entire team as different, random allied heroes for up to 15 seconds. These illusions are dispelled after taking damage twice, and a Deceiver is spawned for each illusion dispelled.
2
Seeing Double
Mana: 120
Cooldown: 100 seconds
Activate to clone each allied minion wave on the map. These cloned waves deal half the damage of a normal wave and have 1 Health, aside from the Wizard minion.

The Wizard minions in the additional waves become Veiled Evokers upon being revealed, gaining an area attack that does 120(+4%) damage every 1.3 seconds to their targets. These Veiled Evokers have 1000(+4%) health each, and last until killed.

The Veiled Evokers can only soak XP at half-efficiency in their true form and last until killed.

Special Mount

1
Now You See Me...
Mana: N/A
Cooldown: 35 seconds
Activate to enter Stealth for up to 5 seconds and increase your movement speed by 50% for the duration of the Stealth.

The moment of truth is nigh!

Go forth and devour.
Your senses deceive you.

Casting Meteor Strike:
Dance, puppets!
Kneel before my wrath!

Casting Possession:
You shall serve me well.
Onward, my servant.

Go now, slaughter any who would oppose you.
Strike when they least expect it.

Using Heroic:
This world is mine!
This will make them them think twice.
My victory is at hand.

Upon Mounting:
Watch closely...
As it has been, so it shall be.

Upon Hearthing:
Let them believe we are retreating.
Retribution will come soon, my servants.

Upon Moving:
So it shall be.
Yes, that will do nicely.
Let it be done, according to MY will.
Everything according to plan

Upon Attacking:
They will know my power!
Witness me!
Bow before me!

Upon Being Healed:
The succor you grant may be ephemeral, but I welcome it nonetheless.
Your lack of ambition bores me, but it does make you useful.

Upon Dying:
You shall not be rid of me that easily.
This is but a minor setback for one such as I.
My hand is in all things. This is no exception.

Upon Killing a Hero:
Just as I have planned.
One step closer...
My victory approaches...

Revenge Kill:
I am the master of their lives, not you.
That one was still useful!

Allied Revenge Kill:
Even in death, my servants abide by my will.

Other lines will be added in the future!

This is very well thought out and truly brilliant. Please post it on the Heroes forum with a link from here to there so those who read it can upvote it. Get Blizzard's attention because this is a fun hero concept.

I understand that possesion is like Aba Hat but whats the point? Amubush? Team fights?

It's an escape, a source of buffs/debuffs, vision control, an ambush tool, and also global presence, along with a variety of creative uses others would likely come up with. It's likely one of the strongest abilities in the game if used right.

A couple of questions I got:

1 - would Belial be able to move while "channeling" possession to a unit/hero ?, (or maybe able to move at a slower pace ?), what would the functionality be of that one other than vision-soak/remote-buff/debuff/situational-teleport.. ?

2 - the channel of the meteors = do they fall RNG or it's like 1 meteor at a targetted location after another, maybe able to target each specifically during the 2 second channel ? (description says "waves" of meteors, so kinda unclear if RNG rain like Gul'Dan's lol)

At first I thought what is this BS, but then realized the depth of the hero, (especially with reading the talent tree afterwards)

But yah = Good concept overall, like the deceiver functionality (Trait) mostly from his kit, fits the theme/lore, his Q could be cool also..

I'll try to answer your questions as best as possible.
1) He can't move while channelling Possession, but he essentially *becomes* an Aba hat while losing his body until he reemerges. It's essentially his *real* mount mechanix, while Now You See Me... is his method of escape/enablement for Possession.

2) the meteors are essentially a channeled version of Jaina's Blizzard, but a somewhat larger radius. It has the appearance of a bunch of meteors falling, but everything in the area is hit and knocked away from the center at the same time.

I'm glad you enjoyed rhe hero concpet :)

Nice concept but I think you need some more clarity with some of his abilities. Like in possession do you completely control a hero or do you control just movement and attack?
Also, I think you need to change its name since Sylv already has this which could cause confusion.
In Petty Illusions, if your ally attacks or uses abilities will it be dispelled? Is it dispelled after 2 basic attack hits or ability hits or both?

Leidiriv (14) | September 8, 2016 12:23pm
With Possession, it doesn't grant you any control. You just follow them like an Abathur Symbiote, as the ability description says.

I don't believe it would cause too much confusion, if any, due to the fact that the icons are entirely different and Syl's Possession is a talent. Nobody complained when Tracer and Zeratul both had Blink, right?

With Petty Illusions, an attack coming from the disguised hero does not count toward dispelling the illusion. Both abilities and auto-attacks count toward dispelling it, though.

Thanks for the clarification on his ult.

I still believe the name should be changed though as both blinks do practically the same thing: get you from A to B in an instant. His E as you explained it works more like symbiote. So.. maybe change the name to Lurk?

a wonderful concept! I want to see more heroes that take advantage of HOTS leveling system to allow truly unique specialists, and this is a great example. I really can't applaud this enough. Which is why I want to give other suggestions just to encourage the concept of mind games against the enemy even more.

First, possessing an enemy is only really interesting to me if they don't know you did it, which suggests to me the need to make sneak-possession doable. An alternate mount would be my best suggestion (see below), but I think saying that the range of possession of an enemy increases if they don't have vision of you, either from obscuring swarm or hiding in the bushes helps that along. This also adds the fun of using obscuring swarm and then hiding in the bushes so your enemy *thinks* they are possessed when they aren't. I'd even not be opposed to possession of an enemy only working (without a talent) if they don't have vision of you, due to possession balancing concerns...

The indefinite ability to possess an enemy offers a bit of a tuning issue in my mind, specifically the "get out of death free" factor. Either belial can contribute meaningfully to fights while possessing an enemy, in which case he can avoid dying by possessing an enemy any time they gank without any sacrifice to his utility and thus becomes effectively unkillable except during team fights when possession will go on cooldown; or he can't contribute meaningfully while possessing an enemy in which case it's only used as a stopgap measure to avoid death and not for it's primary intended use-case because roaming around inside an enemy is too large a sacrifice of utility & soak potential.

I would suggest considering making it harder to possess someone in a gank situation, such as placing a tiny cooldown after being hit by an AA before you can possess someone; making it doable in team fights if your not focused but limiting it's use in gank situations when being focused, or giving it a very short radius making it hard to posses ranged assassins; but combining it with a way to possess someone without their knowing (see both above & below). If you didn't do that at least say that HP regain (and maybe even mp regen) is halted while possessing someone to ensure that you if you escape a gank by possessing with low health with low health your always be just as vulnerable when escaping no matter how long you possess them. Or you could simply put a limit on length of time an enemy can be possessed.

I think the enemy having some way to deal with you if they know their possessed may be interesting as well, particularly if you don't do something to prevent possession from being a get-out-of-gank-free card as above. There are a few things I could think of for handling this. One option being in their fountain area still harms you, so if a possessed opponent recalls you need to evacuate before the recall completes or die (maybe make the fountain do slow amount of damage so you can survive a recall if the enemy leaves the fountain immediately, but if they stick around to kill you your die in a little time).

Finally, this concept screams to me the need for an alternate mount. The idea of controlling the enemy information should include their knowledge about where you are positioned, but a simple mount makes this too straightforward case of roaming allot. I think if you up his power slightly while dropping his mount and thus roaming power to compensate you get a more interesting metagame, where misinformation about where he is located is more important because he is both more powerful when he surprises you, but less capable of rapidly changing locations once they figure out where he is. More importantly it makes possession a more interesting talent, since possessing an ally before they mount up would be a great alternate mode of getting between two places quickly without a mount and further encourage using the talent on allies, thus allowing you to hide the number of opponents that are attacking an enemy at a time.

To go along with this the master of lies feels like he should be able to stealth somewhat. so instead of a mount I'd suggest a cool down ability that stealth him and perhaps gives a small movement boost, but is used more for the ability to sneak up on people to possess, mind games when combined with obscuring swarm & possession, escapes by hiding, etc. Likely with a talent that allows him to become partially immune to damage when stealthed so it can be used as a defensive ability as well.

Thank you so much for the very detailed, cogent feedback. In light of your recommendations, I've added a 0.5 second channel to Possession and a new unique mount for Belial. Your feedback means a lot to me, and I am very glad you enjoyed my hero concept. Have a good one!

Unique, fun, interactive and of course, clean.
I really love Petty Illusions, Cloak and Dagger and Obscuring Swarm the most, since it's all stuff we don't get a lot of in Heroes. Abilities synergize and feel that they belong to one character, the flow of the skills are good, the icons are clean...
Just very awesome man :D
