Threat Hero Notes
1
Nova Punish stupid novas that get too close with your howling blast and Frozen Tempest and never let them escape.
2
Nazeebo His damage is spooky but if you get caught in zombie wall just attack move to kill one and break out, unless he takes Sprint or Bolt of the Storm he cant escape you.
3
Diablo Diablo can peel very well for his team against Arthas and trying to kill him his rather tough with his large health pool. Otherwise you can just ignore him once his spells are on cooldown
3
Stitches Dodge hooks. If you get eaten by him you can easily walk it off if you have your ult has well. Only works on large maps like cursed hollow where if your behind the enemy gate there is another way out. I don't recommend trying to fight him head on though he has a large heal and high hp regen. BUT KEEP IN MIND that he is a threat when his team can follow up and pile on top of you.
3
Abathur Toxic Nests are annoying and so his Symbiote, Do not underestimate his damage though. Really just an annoyance.
4
Zagara Hydralisks are extremely annoying and effective against you and she can kite you well if your not destroying the creep tumors. Otherwise she has no escape and falls pretty mediocre in the threat meter.
4
Uther His heals are a total nuisance when your going in for trades and he can cc you pretty well pre 16. Always take relentless versus Uther. In a prolonged duel you will come out on top though.
4
Illidan Illidan is very slippery making trading with him annoying. When he uses Evasion do not waste your Frostmourne Hungers. Do not get baited by the health gain on Metamorphisis, And if he uses the hunt on you, that damage can be healed up or even use Stoneskin to mitigate some of it and just walk away or fight him if you can win. Don't get baited by metamorphosis it can turn the fight into his favor. If you are stunned by the Hunt it will disable your ability to heal.
4
Rehgar Rehgar's Earthbind totem is pretty annoying when playing as Arthas and he can sustain his laning partner pretty well. If he Rehgar is solo he'll probably try to push you in so don't be afraid to push back and bully him. if he uses Bloodlust just snare him and stroll away, If he takes Ancestral Healing that's only a setback.
5
Gazlowe Very annoying in while laning do not fight in his turrets at all. Take Relentless at 16 and do your best to avoid his ult combo. He has no escape so abuse it
5
Li Li Honestly LiLi is just a nuisance, shes annoying to catch and she heals pretty well, But if you recieve a gank from your team and set her behind in xp you'll start asserting dominance and she wont be able to sustain aswell. If she expunges all of her mana then just all in her. Another thing to note is that her Blinding Wind WILL block your bonus damage on Frostmourne Hungers, Remove the two stacks of blind prior to using your heroic trait.
5
Tassadar Tassadar's Psionic storm is pretty annoying, don't stand in it. His Dimensional Shift is only 1.5 seconds so if he was already in your Frozen Tempest he wont get far. If Force wall is chosen its just really annoying and can keep you off his team pretty effectively. If Archon is taken do not underestimate his damage.Save your Howling Blast after his Dimensional Shift is down.
5
Tyrande Dodge her stun, her heal doesn't do much on herself and can easily be taken head on. Just don't stay in her ultimte for too long.
6
Arthas The better build will win.
6
E.T.C. ETC has amazing peel capabilities. If the ETC is good you'll have a tough time getting into the backline. Do your best to stay out of the radius of Moshpit, If Stage Dive is chosen just heal and walk away.
6
Sgt. Hammer A good Hammer will never let you near her. Do not underestimate Spider Mines. Wait until her knockback ability is used before using Howling Blast and don't stand in Napalm Strike, That will decimate your ghouls lowering your sustain.
6
Azmodan Azmodan pushes the everliving hell out of you and will force you behind gates early with all his little demons. His lazer also hurts alot so dont underestimate it. But if you catch him when he is out of mana its like a fish out of water and he wont be able to escape.
7
Zeratul Unlike nova Zeratul has an escape and can pop in and out when trading so he's a bit tougher to catch and his void prison will hinder your effectiveness in a teamfight if you are caught in it. But if he takes Nazrims fury then its essentially a death wish for him.
7
Valla Valla's Vault really renders your Howling Blast useless but she'll die pretty quickly. Wait until she Vaults to use your Howling Blast. Early on in laning she'll probably pelt you with spells and autos just wait and punish her mistakes. Valla can be easily all-inned at level 4.
7
Murky Murky is nothing more but a minor annoyance but if Murky chooses Octo-Grab you can get bursted down rather quickly. Aside from that do not waste much on him. I am also unsure if Relentless will reduce Octo-Grab's time.
7
Sonya Sonya does spooky damage but she dies rather quickly, I prefer doing quick engagements against her before she has enough fury to trade back her Leap, Chain, and W combo can hurt you and the cc will prevent you from healing for brief moments, shes more dangerous when your low on hp then at any other time
7
Tyrael Tyrael is extremely efficient at prolonged trades just like Arthas But Tyrael pulls ahead though thanks to his Righteousness (his team shield) wait until that is used before you attempt to trade with him and unless El'Druin's Might is down I wouldnt bother trying to Howling Blast with him if he can just tp away. He can also displace the hell out of you and peel very well. If you know his Judgment is targeted at you pop stoneskin to mitigate incoming damage. If it is not used on you and you are close to the target peel, if you are not close go after the enemy back line.
7
Tychus Tychus cant do much against you before level 10, You can just laugh off the grenade and his cant dash far like Valla. At level 10 he gets annoying, you have to kill him twice when he has Odin up. If he takes Drakken Laser Drill make sure that doesn't get too much damage off.
8
Jaina Careful about her CC but take advantage when its down
9
Muradin Muradin may not be able to kill you solo but if Haymaker is chosen as his ultimate he can keep you out of the fight preventing you from doing your job. Being up close and personal with the enemy team.
9
Falstad Falstad can kite Arthas very well making it difficult to defeat him in lane, I suggest soaking and when he gets over zealous punish him by landing your Howling Blast and stick on him with your Frozen Tempest.
9
Raynor Raynor does spooky damage, Heals like a mad man (Nullifies your envenom if his heal is up) and his raiders will wail on you while he kites. He's killable but its tough, I suggest fighting him when you know his heal is down and otherwise just try to proc it. When it is procced you have a 45 second window to all in him
9
Kerrigan Once Kerrigan has Maelstrom I would not recommend fighting her head on. You need to get very lucky to win a fight against her. Kerrigans' heroic trait will mitigate alot of damage from you and you will spend a lot of your resources trying to secure on kill. Fighting her head one is not worth it.
9
Chen Chen is pretty annoying to deal with because he can sustain ALOT of your damage with his shield and win prolonged exchanges because of his shield and he has low cooldowns with no mana (because brew) His Barrel ultimate can isolate you away from his team which is pretty rough if you are solo tanking and his other ultimate can body block you which is just annoying.
9
Anub'arak Anub'Arak is pretty goddamn annoying, His web ultimate will lock you out of a fight granting easy access to your backline and his E and Q can stun you preventing sustain. He can be pretty tough to kill too with his shield so i believe it is best to bait it out and then burst him with a combo. Trades like this will work in your favor 80% of the time.
10
Brightwing Pretty hard to trade early on with Brightwings passive going off every few seconds. Emerald wind does a great job of peeling you off the team but the main reason Brightwing is so far up in threat is her Polymorph. Polymorph will cancel your Frozen Tempest and prevent you from healing with Army of the Undead and Death Coil.
10
Malfurion I really hate Malfurion. In lane he will sustain extremely well. I advise for you to try to burn alot of his mana and all-inning him when he is low/oom on mana. He can also kite you extremely well with his snare, But the biggest factor here is his silence. When you are silenced you will be unable to keep Frozen Tempest up, nor heal off of your Ghouls or pop it if you haven't yet. This completley lowers your sustain in fights. But Relentless will make his silence go to only 1.5 seconds, Relentless is a must against Malfurion.

Abilities Top

Trait: Frostmourne Hungers: Your next auto attack will do 100% increased damage and restore mana. This is an auto attack reset meaning after you use one auto attack you can activate this and attack much faster then what you normally can.

Q: Death coil: This ability is a point & click ability it can do a rather mediocre amount of damage to an enemy hero or structure or it can heal Arthas.

W: Howling Blast: This is an AOE root that can catch multiple enemies and keep them in place for 1.5 seconds

E: Frozen Tempest: Frozen tempest is a toggle-able AOE ability but it applies an increasing slow the longer the enemy is within the radius rather then a root while doing damage over time. Keeping this ability on drains mana per second so be sure to keep that in mind and don't oom yourself.

R: Summon Sindragosa: Summon Sindragosa is a skill shot that summons the frost wyrm Sindragosa to fly in a straight line leaving a trail of ice in its path that roots enemy minions for 10 seconds, and freezes enemy structures for 20 seconds. It also slows enemies walking on its path. Heads up: Sindragosa has a high wind up time.

R: Army of the Dead: Army of the dead raises several ghouls to fight alongside Arthas for 15 seconds and can be activated again to sacrifice ghouls to heal.

Pros and Cons Top

Pros:
High sustain
High damage
Durable
Great with champions that have the Executioner talent
Very strong in extended trades
Destroys Nova

Cons:
Low mobility
If chain crowd controlled will not be able to sustain
Easy to miss skillshot
Can be kited easily if not positioned properly

Priority with talents Top

Talents with a red outline I consider not worth it and should be avoided.

Talents with a yellow outline I consider okay to take in some situations.

Talents with a green outline are interchangeable depending on how the game is going.

Tier 1 Top

Frozen Wastes - Frozen Tempest radius increased by 33%

Explanation: I consider this a very crucial talent because that 33% makes the radius huge therefore making it more useful, you can start slowing people from further away catch up and then body block.
ALTERNATIVES

Tier 2 Top

Envenom - Activate to poison an enemy hero dealing 210 damage over 6 seconds.

Explanation: Envenom is really strong, a good analogy for this is that its very reminiscent of the summoner spell 'Ignite' from League of Legends. This ability is best used during a fight rather then trying to finish some off, Unlike Ignite though this can get healed through with a big burst of healing like Rehgars ultimate or stitches E. Using this during a fight guarantees they will lose that hp no matter what and applies a lot of pressure on the enemy. As you are fighting it is still ticking down aswell.
ALTERNATIVES

Tier 3 Top

Rune Tap - Every 3rd Auto Attack heals you for 4% of your max health.

Explanation: Just like how health percentage damage abilities are incredibly strong so are health percentage heals. What i like to do with Arthas when fighting someone is auto attack twice then as soon as i'm done with the second auto I use Frostmourne Hungers for the auto attack reset, healing me and restoring mana at the same time.
ALTERNATIVES

Tier 4 Top

Army of the Dead - Summon Ghouls that last 15 seconds. Sacrifice Ghouls to heal 150 health.

Explanation: This talent makes Arthas insanely good, Completely blows his second ultimate out of the water. Why is this ultimate so good? You get little ghouls to fight for you (whatever you are attacking they will attack) and you can sacrifice them to heal yourself. So if you have 6 ghouls present each one is worth Allowing you for 15 seconds to have the capability of restoring a lot of hp in flat amounts.
ALTERNATIVES

Tier 5 Top

Relentless - Reduces the duration of silences, stuns, slows, and roots against your Hero by 50%.

Explanation: Really great talent here, Arthas can get blown up if chain crowd controlled by the enemy. When Arthas is stunned he is unable to heal, this gets him out of the fray faster and able to regenerate his health. I tend to default to this but don't let that dismay you. This tier has a lot of good talents.
ALTERNATIVES

Tier 6 Top

Stoneskin - Activate to gain 30% of your max health has a shield for 5 seconds.

Explanation: I use to use Immortal Coil but then I used Stoneskin and my god where has it been all my life. This talent has saved my *** so many times and once again its health percentage.
ALTERNATIVES

Tier 7 Top

Legion of Northrend - 3 additional ghouls are created and ghouls last 50% longer. (15 seconds to 22)

Explanation: Now do not get me wrong if you are in a competitive setting you should take Resurgence of the Storm, But for solo queuing I really enjoy taking Legion of Northrend. More ghouls will do (albeit a tiny amount) more damage and stay alive longer. More ghouls = more hp to regain.
ALTERNATIVES

Maps Top

Dragon Shire: On Dragon Shire i recommend going top lane. I say this because there are better champions for mid who can (if you are losing) keep the enemies off of the dragon knight better then you can and in most cases Gazlowes will go bot lane and i personally do not like dealing with their turrets.

Garden of Terror: Either lane is fine top or bot (I guess i'm not a fan of Arthas) soak your xp and take merc camps when applicable. It is fine to go middle lane here but make sure when your pushed you attempt to roam and if nothing happens soak. Group to fight the ****ty terror when your enemy has it, ultimately this maps objective can be ignored.

Blackhearts Bay: I really like going solo bot on this map. Arthas can lane extremely safe and sustain his damage taken back up, Even if you are 1v2 in the bottom lane you can stay safe and soak just don't waste your Death Coil to poke. and when the chests spawn if you are left alone you can easily take the chest before the enemy team can react and safely get away. Top lane is fine but I like bot for the easy chest. Do not be afraid to take early sea giants shortly before or after the chest spawns and make sure your watching the easy camp respawn for the easy two gold doubloons.

Haunted Mines: Go to whatever lane you want here just make sure you group to take knights when the first mines open, First golem is insanely weak and if your enemy is missing more then 5 seconds they are probably taking one of their (or yours if your not paying attention) mercenary camps.

Cursed Hollow: Soak any lane you want here and try to take your easy camp (if your in the lane closest to it) by 1:30 it will be tough for your enemy to respond to it while tribute is spawning.

When to use what Top

You can use Death Coil to harass or sustain, My typical lead in to trade would be to lead with Howling Blast while Frozen Tempest is on, Death Coil the target and use Frostmourne Hungers while consistently auto attacking. If a fight is about to break up and your not topped of on Health I would use Death coil to heal over poking or if you get caught out of position and getting crowd controlled its not worth doing 200 something damage (well do that if you can kill an enemy) when you can heal 500 (these numbers are just examples).

Pop this before starting a teamfight, or if you get caught out. Get ready to spam press your R key. It is also good to use when seiging a fort or the enemy core, it makes sieging a lot faster. Don't be afraid to use it in a skirmish or a 1v1 situation either the sustain is insane (Sorry for the unintentional rhyme).

This will save you so much, if your low on HP pop it. When you are going right for the enemies back line the enemies will probably react by using their ultimates on you so if you can anticipate it or if you can see them coming like Tyraels ult use it immediately to mitigate the incoming damage you are about to receive.

I cannot stress this enough but use this while you are fighting someone not just to kill them (this applies to a skirmish, definitely use it to pick someone off if they are stupid and over extended with 10%hp or so) While you are fighting envenom will be burning away giving you massive momentum.

Synergies Top

Synergy: 10/10 Kerrigan is great when paired with Arthas, If she can land her combo and pull the enemies towards you they're mote than likely not going to be able to escape unless they have an escape mechanism in their kit. Tychus is very simaler in this aspect but his grenade is a bit less reliable. Plus Kerrigan has a stun too.

Synergy 5/10 0/10 without void prison Void prison seems like a double edged sword, you could easily combo a good Void Prison into a a howling blast but at the same time if you step too close your going to set your self back. Timing is crucial here.

Synergy 6/10 If you are in the midst of the battle slowing everybody while he uses overdrive plus Shock & Awe is pretty much gg

Any warrior for obvious reasons, the priority target will never be able to escape if cc is chained properly.

Diablo Synergy 7/10
Sonya Synergy 8/10
ETC Synergy 8/10
Muradin Synergy 9/10
Stitches Synergy 9/10
Tyrael Synergy 9/10

Synergy 10/10 Malfurion can lead with his root allowing you to walk up and constantly slow them. Hell if Malfurion takes his silence they wont be even to dash away, and if there's any stragglers just Howling Blast them. Oh and he gives you mana, what more do you want?

Synergy 5/10 I only give Rehgar a 5/10 beccause he has no hard cc, But what he lacks in hard cc he makes up with ancestral healing. It is still possible that you can die while Ancestral Healing is being used on you though.

Synergy 9/10 Tyrande is amazing with Arthas! If you can time your crowd control abilities so they don't lapse over each other then use both of your slows (Your Frozen Tempest, Her ultimate that isn't shadowstalk) no one can escape, and she can make an enemy player take more damage. Tyrande also heals you and while healing will speed you up making it more difficult for your opponents to escape.

Synergy 10/10 Mad heals, and mad stuns! Uther will sustain you, provide you with vision (clairvoyance) and even shield you if he were to choose that talent. Same with tyrande, chain crowd control and the enemy will never escape.

Li Li and Bright wing can heal you and keep you sustained but they really don't offer has much as the other Supports so that is why they do not get their own segments. Li Li will score slightly higher over Brightwing because she can constantly supply you with mana too, But Brightwing is still the superior healer. Tassadar needs distortion beam to make it work with Arthas and his ults don't really stick out too much, Force wall can hinder you and Archon is just damage. His vision trait is good though. I'm also not saying Tassadar is a bad hero he is just has lackluster synergy with Arthas.

Brigtwing Synergy 4/10
Li Li Synergy 5/10
Tassadar Synergy 3/10

Synergy 7/10 Gazlowe gets a 7/10 in my books because to land his combo with the TNT and Miniature Black Hole takes a decent ammount of skill and somebody unskilled in Gazlowe (such as myself) will deflate the synergy that is possible. Otherwise wait untill his combo's crowd control has worn off and Howling Blast any stragglers (but by then its more then likely the enmy team would have been wiped).

Synergy 7/10 I very much think that Murky is pretty good with Arthas when he takes the Octo-Grab ult, If timed correctly you can catch someone out of position and hold them in place for 4.5 seconds. March of the Murlocs is pretty good too with its high slow amount and decent damage if the enemies don't know how to avoid it for whatever reason.

Synergy 8/10 Nazeebo is amazing pick with Arthas, Nazeebo can lead with a zombie wall followed up by a Howling Blast making for a great pick composition. On top of all that with Arthas practically having a perma slow the enemies will have a very hard time escaping Ravenous Spirit.

Synergy 6/10 - 0/10 without Devouring Maw Combo devouring maw and howling blast and that's about it, not much else to say here. They're really good together but devouring maw is crucial. But who would pick Nydus Network anyway?

Synergy 3/10 Nothing too big here, they're great together but synergy wise nothing special. Having Arthas on a team with Hammer is strong, Arthas can keep enemies slowed within Hammers Napalm Strike for longer and they'll have a hard time escaping hammer auto attack range while being slowed. On top of everything Hammer can get executioner too so she's essentially going to be dealing 40% more damage to anyone slowed by arthas.

I cant really determine what to put here. Abathur is a very good Hero and can take the form of another hero can really synergise well with Arthas or become Arthas himself and offer double the CC.

Synergy 5/10 Chen is decent with Arthas but there are tradeoffs: If Chen takes the root talent at level 7 that is wondrous because that leads up to an easy howling blast on your end and his keg smash slow will stack with yours making it tough to escape. And if there is enough coordination amongst players Chen can use his Barrel to knock people into your slow but at the same time he can knock people out of your range. On the otherhand if he takes Storm, Earth, Fire he can body block relentlessly and keep people in your Frozen Tempest and line up easy Howling blasts, plus the slow from the earth spirit will stack.

Synergy 6/10 She has CC, just combo it with her and let her do her damage

Patch updates Top

08/07/14

Nerf: Runetap now heals Arthas for 4% of his max health down from 6%
-I Feel as if this is a deserved nerf because that third auto gave such a large boost in HP in skirmishes made Arthas quite annoying for most other heroes, It is sad to see a nerf but it's justified. This nerf does make it tougher to have prolonged fights with heroes like Anub'arak, Chen, And Tyrael. Be a tad careful around them and get them when their shields are down.

Nerf: Frozen Tempest mana cost increased from 10 to 12 - Just seems like a nerf to tone down Arthas' dominance, Just pay more attention to your mana and you should be fine.
