Samuro the Blademaster

"If on my journey I should encounter the titans, then the titans shall be cut!"

Samuro is a high-mobility assassin on HOTS. His main ability is the 'Mirror image'-skill, which summons 2 images of himself. These images deal 30% damage, remain for relatively long period of time and, if used right, create confusion amongst your opposing team. He also has a a damage buff and a good escape move. Samuro is rated as hard difficulty, to which I agree. Mastering Samuro is hard work, but once you do he is incredibly rewarding!

Talents Top

Legend

Each talent is selected per tier. For you convenience, each talent in the description below each tier is also tagged:

Y - Yes, pick this talent. It is best in my opinion/experience.
S - Situational, pick this skill or the other situational skill in this tier.
N - No, do not pick this talent. It is the least beneficial in my opinion/experience.

All picks described below are based on my own Samuro experiences and some practice dummy rounds in 'try'-mode. Don't bash me if the numbers are not accurate, some talents might be just more suited to my playstyle. As always, they are just indicators and descriptions. Feel free to deviate and create your own build. Comments can be addressed in the... Yes, you guessed it: Comment section. Constructive feedback is welcome.

N - Way of Illusion
You can easily complete the quest. Just critical-hit 40 enemies and you will get 20+20 attack damage. However, in my experience it simply does not stack up agains Way of the Blade's +25% basic attack damage on critical hit and critting every 3rd auto-attack instead of every 4th.

Y - Way of the Blade
As explained above, greatly improves your DPS, as it will lower your crit to every 3rd strike instead of every 4th. In addition you will get a +25% basic attack damage on every critical hit. It also synergizes great with Press the Attack's improved attack speed at level 16.

N - Way of the Wind
Even more speed, seriously? It *might* be benefition, but I fail to see how this adds more benefit an already impressive +25% walk speed and stealth. Also, you will lose serious DPS, so fine you can catch up with fleeing heroes with this... But you cannot kill them. Meh.

S - Mirage
Spell block for you and your images, great! This works against enemy hero talents. A wise pick when fighting a ranged talent hero, like Jaina or Li-Ming.

N - One With The Wind
While practicing you could use this talent, however to my idea you should not get hit when stealthed in the first place. Chances that you get hit while stealthed are also smaller than you getting hit during a fight. No need to consider this talent.

S - Deflection
Greatly reduces enemy basic attacks while Advancing Strikes is *active*. Great when fighting auto-attack heroes, like Valla or Sgt. Hammer. Do keep in mind that Advancing Strikes is only active when you basic attack an enemy and 2 seconds. Call this offensive-defense. It works great, but it will depend on the enemy team's composition.

Y - Burning Blade
Yes! Plus 65% basic attack damage and AoE effect when using Critical Strike. Most usefull due to the highest DPS output of it's class.

N - Phantom Pain
An additional 40% basic attack damage *per active image* when using Critical Strike. Might be a pick if minions and heroes are more spread across the map (all solo people, in quick match for example). However, in my experience people and minions tend to stack, making the AoE of Burning Blade a more viable choise.

N - Crushing Blows
It gives you 2 charges of Critical Strike, but just a 25% based attack damage increase. I just don't feel this talent dealing enough damage though. Also no AoE.

S - Bladestorm
A really viable choice, it is easy to master and it has great damage output. Great pick to start with and occasionally has its uses, for example if the enemy team clutters like a ball of glue... Use this to slice and dice them all in just 4 seconds.

Y - Illusion Master
Oh yes. This is where the magic happens! Illusion Master kicks down the door with 15% damage increase for your Mirror Image. Not impressed? Remember that you have *2* images and you can control each image separately. Is that hard? Yes, absolutely. Rememer what I told you about a hard to master hero? But here is the trick. You can switch places with your images and it just has a 8 second cooldown. See where I am going? This is an almost infinite escape trick! Getting to half your health in a heavy teamfight? Send your image away from the teamfight, then switch places with him. BOOM you are gone. Then either walk away or stealth to sneak behind the enemy team and kill any fleeing heroes. Amazing skill and great potential (in the right hands)! Bottomline: Pick this, even if you just pick it for the boost in damage from your Mirror Image.

S - Mirrored Steel
Your basic attacks decrease the 18 second cooldown of Mirror Image, can be useful as you can get your images up quickly. Do note that your images also live for 18 seconds, which is equal to your cooldown. If you are able to keep your images alive, do not pick this. Images are necessary for Samuro to stay viable, therefore this pick is situational.

S - Kawarimi
No issues keeping your images alive? Good, add some more damage with this talent. It will spawn an image at your location when casting Wind Walk. This will make your stealth escape more easy and adds to your damage output.

S - Shukuchi
Do you did not pick Illusion Master, and you are having trouble escaping from your foes? Pick this talent, you won't regret it. It adds a little Blink-ability while you stealth. The short teleport distance is comparable to Li-Ming's, Teleport ability but with added stealth bonus. The perfect getaway exists!

S - Merciless Strikes
If, and only *if* your team has heavy slowed/rooted/stunned. Pick this, oh absolutely. Every basic attack will critically hit the enemy that is slowed/rooted/stunned. Think about Jaina's Frostbite, Chromie's Slowing Sand or Malfurion's Entagling Roots. You will annihilate foes who are slowed, rooted or stunned.

N - Harsh Winds
+30% damage increase damage from you and your images when you attack a hero when coming from Wind Walk's stealth. Similar to Lunara's Hunter's Mark, but this only works for you. Least viable pick in my opinion.

Y - Press the Attack
This works for me! Whenever you attack Advancing Strikes will activate. This talent will increase your attack speed with 60% in just 4 strikes. Remeber we picked Way of the Blade? This is going to boost your DPS massively. Every third attack, the now occurs 60% faster will give you a critical hit. Also remember 15% additional damage your images do because of Illusion Master. You see how it adds up right? Take note of your enemy's HP bar, even tanks can now be bursted in very little time.

S - Dance Of Death
Really useful if you decided to stick to take Bladstorm at level 10. If you can, try to mix it with Kawarimi, this will give you a 3rd image to spin around and deal damage with.

Y - Three Blade Style
This is how we do it. 36 second uptime (+100% increase) and an additional +50% health for your Mirror Image images. As we can also control them separately through Illusion Master and they have an increased 15% damage this will give you the ability to control the battlefield. Yes, it takes practice, but always having images walking around will already push you damage output significantly.

N - Wind Strider
By using Illusion Master with a short cooldown, Wind Walk is either a fight opener or you second escape. I don't see any reason to further lower this cooldown as it is already you last chance. We all know you don't get many second chances.

N - Blademaster's Pursuit
It probably stacks nicely with Way of the Wind, but as with that talent. I fail to see the use of massive speed increase if you deal little damage. The builds I have tried including this are almost half the DPS (700-800 DPS versus 1350-1450 DPS). Might try it sometime, but for this DPS build it is a no-go for me.

Gameplay Top

Early game
Sneak onto squishy heroes who solo: Wind Walk --> Mirror Image --> Critical Strike
This does mean that you lose your escape with Wind Walk, so don't overdo it!

Soaking: Auto attack --> Mirror Image --> Critical Strike --> Escape: Wind Walk

Mid game (10+)
Continue doing the same, your sneak become more viable as you are even stronger now. Try to keep your images up at all time. If you pick Illusion Master, that will be your escape. Allowing you to open your attacks with Wind Walk. If your team has some strong damage, try to sneak around the team fight to ambush fleeing enemies.

Late game (20+)
You are a force to be reckoned with, you can significantly burst enemies. Try to always keep fighting so that your Advancing Strikes is up, buffing you with Deflection and Press the Attack.

Conclusion Top

I think this is a viable DPS build. During some dummy testing and reading on his stats, this build will certainly throw a punch at any enemy team!
