Egon Stetmann

Reasonable Scientist

"Science wins again!"

A brilliant young scientist researching alien technologies for the Terran Dominion.  He found himself on the wrong side of the war between the government and the colonists he oppressed when he learned that his discoveries were being turned into weapons of war through horrific human experimentation.  Unable to convince his colleagues to change their ways, he destroyed his research and fled, becoming a fugitive from the Dominion's corrupt justice.  Hunted, he was rescued by Jim Raynor and came to join his Raiders as their science adviser and technical support.  Proving invaluable by spending his time in the lab upgrading and inventing devices they needed to oppose the Dominion.  After being pulled into the Storm, Egon has continued to tinker, constantly perfecting the tools that allow him and others to continue their fight.

Notes:

Egon is a flexible character who has not one, not two, but three skill bars to switch between.  These are accessed through the D and Z keys and set up so that Egon can get from any one of his three options to any other at any given time (minus the brief cooldown which prevents him from switching too rapidly).  Although each of these bars has its own distinctive flair, helped along by a trait passive that changes for each, they all help Egon fulfill the role of support.  Each offering a healing skill, a damaging skill, and a utility skill to deploy so that Egon switches between flavors of support rather than completely different roles.

Modes:

-[NA] Nano-Assembler (Default).  Attacks with a ranged grenade launcher.  A mode for cobbling together helpful machines.  It features long-lasting skills with persistent impact with cooldowns divided into multiple charges.  Its ability to set up defenses that pay off over time should be suited for pushing lanes and taking camps but struggle to have an immediate effect in a fight.

-[HE] High Energy (Trait).  Attacks with a cutting laser beam.  A mode of shields and excited particles.  It features big, splashy effects from powerful skills.  Its high damage and raw power should be well-suited to heavy fighting but come at the cost of expensive skills with lengthy cooldowns.

-[XS] Exo-Skeleton (Mount).  Attacks in melee, with robotic waldo limbs.  A mode for enhancement by mechanical means.  It features quick, spammable skills with low cooldowns and effects that hamper opponents while helping Egon swiftly get around the battlefield.  Its should be used to survive, offering excellent protection for Egon but lacking the ability to offer such help to others.

Combat Trait

1
MULTI-TOOL
Has a different passive effect depending on your current mode.

[NA] NANO-ASSEMBLER MODE (Default) - When you use a skill, the cooldown of all your other skills is decreased.  This applies to skills in other Modes, too.

[HE] HIGH-ENERGY MODE (Trait) - When you use a skill, you regenerate a percent of your maximum mana over time.

[XS] EXO-SKELETON MODE (Mount) - When you use a skill, for a time its mana cost is reduced.  This effect stacks up to a reduction of 50%.

Primary Abilities

1
(Q) - Healing Skill
(NA) NANO-REPAIR BOT.  Charges.  Summon a machine that attaches to target ally and periodically heals them.  Only one machine can be active on an ally at a time.

(HE) REGENERATION MATRIX.  Shield target ally, they gain health regeneration while shielded.

(XS) SLAM IT!  Self-cast.  Charges.  Passively regenerate an amount of health over time for each remaining charge.  Use a charge to chug an energy drink that restores your mana over time and grants a movement speed boost.
2
(W) Combat Skill
(NA) GRAY GOO.  Charges.  Release a canister of creeping nano-assemblers that are spread by any enemy that touches them.  They deal damage over time and slow enemies with which they come into contact.

(HE) IRRADIATION RAY.  Target enemy becomes irradiated, they and any enemies near them take damage over time for a while.

(XS) LEAP FORWARD.  Dash to target enemy, Dazing them and dealing damage before leaping a short distance away.
3
(E) - Utility
(NA) POCKET NUKE.  Charges.  Plant a burrowing mine that becomes stealthed.  When an enemy touches it they take damage and are briefly stunned.

(HE) STASIS BEAM.  The first enemy champion hit is damaged, loses mana, and has the cooldown of their skills and any skill they use in a short while increased.

(XS) AUTOMATED DEFENSES.  Spin, hitting enemies in a circle around you and briefly slowing them.  You gain a moderate shield that increases slightly for each enemy hit.

Q - Nano-Repair Bot.  Summon that attaches to a character and periodically restores their health.

W - Gray Goo.  Grenade that spreads a sticky, damaging carpet.

W - Irradiation Ray.  Target enemy and any enemies nearby take damage over time.

E - Stasis Beam.  A skill shot that drains mana and adds to the cooldown of skills.
3
(Z) Exo-Skeleton Mode [XS]
Q - Slam It!.  Passively gain health over time for each charge remaining.  Activate to restore mana over time and gain movement speed.

role

Egon is a flexible support who brings a wide-variety of tools to any battle.  He's able to flip between three different skill bars, each loaded with a different variation on what a support character needs.  Instead of switching from the role of an assassin to a tank, he instead gains access to new ways of accomplishing the same task.  I've drawn on the abilities of the Science Vessel as much as the Medic and his iconic in-campaign appearance as one to give him more of a mad scientist vibe.  His base kit, Nano-Assembler (NA) is great for laning, taking camps, and preventing ganks with its plentiful summons.  His High-Energy (HE) mode is tailored for heavy fighting with big, powerful spells to decimate foes and protect allies.  While his Exo-Skeleton (XS) offers mobility and recovery and hard shutdown at the cost of not being able to heal anyone else.  Skilled players, though, will find ways to combine them and string together amazing combinations of skills drawn from all three.  The result is a versatile character that can adapt to a wide variety of conditions as a match wears on.  Capable of being everything from a healer to a burst mage before switching to something else again.   He's probably better as an off-support than a main healer, though, because of the sheer utility that his extended kit provides and because of a lack of overall healing capabilities (Although Generator X could be really powerful in this regard).  Still, if an off-support is a glue character, made to compliment the strengths of other characters and hold them together by making up for their weaknesses, then Egon should be welcome in a lot of teams.

talents

Talents here are going to be a problem, an issue that affects any character that transitions from one set of skills to another.  Most charcters rely on their talents to improve skills, adding power as the game goes on, but with so many skills that's not viable for Egon.  It's not feasible to balance nine or more talents per tier.  And, even if it were possible, such a set-up would limit rather than enhance Egon's abilities.  It would force him to rely on that one skill on that one bar that he made better to the detriment of the rest.  Sticking to one mode to accentuate that advantage rather than flipping between all of them as he's meant to do.  So, Egon will have to have talents that add passive benefits or active skills rather than enhancing his existing abilities.  As a result, I've tried to set the power of his basic kit relatively high.  There are some strong skills here but they're not going to have much in the way of improvement as he levels, meaning they'll have to be to compete late game.  This might give Egon too much of an early game advantage, compounding the one he gains from having an extended skill bar, but I don't see a way around it.

I don't see how that would make it any less complicated. There are three skill bars and you switch between the active one and the other two with the D and Z keys (by default). Adding buttons on top of those skill bars doesn't change that. Besides, that row of numerical keys is going to be crowded as this Egon is a prime candidate (as I tried to explain in the talent section) for a slew of active skills. Cleanse, Clairvoyance, maybe not Protective Shielding since he already has a better option, but those or upgraded versions are going to be filling out his talent lists.
