Freja

Bounty Hunter

"I always deliver."

Freja is the newest ranged assassin in Heroes of the Storm. Equipped with a simple, but deadly kit, she excels at waveclear and carries impeccable mobility. With Bola Shot, she can then become an initiator, while with Thunder Circuit, she gains great burst and AoE damage.

Basic Stats
  1. Attack Damage – 75 (+4% per level)
  2. Attack Speed - 1.5 per second
  3. Attack Range - 5.5
  4. Max Health - 1340 (+4% per level)
  5. Health Regen - 2.65 (+4% per level)
  6. Max Mana - 490 (+10 per level)
  7. Mana Regen - 2.90 (+0.098 per level)

Primary Talent Paths
  1. AA Build - deliver consistent basic attack damage from afar.
  2. Aimed Arrow Poke - improve the burst of Aimed Arrow.
  3. Aimed Arrow Combo - "We already have Q Valla at home".

Combat Trait

1
[D] Hunter's Precision
Activate to increase the range of your basic attack by 1.1 and of Aimed Arrow by 3, as well as increase the damage of both by 25%, but lose 25% move speed. Lasts until cancelled, casting Quick Dash or mounting.
1 CD

Primary Abilities

1
[Q] Aimed Arrow
Fire an arrow in a straigh line, dealing 60 (+4% per level) damage to the first enemy hit. After 0.75 seconds, that enemy and enemies within 2.5 range of that enemy take 180 (+4% per level) damage.
30 Mana. 4 CD (begins after firing the arrow)
The arrow's base range without Hunter's Precision is 6.
2
[W] Quick Dash
Dash 5 range in target direction and refresh the cooldown of Aimed Arrow.
50 Mana. 10 CD
You can't move over terrain with this ability.
3
[E] Updraft
Jump to target area within 4 range.
25 Mana. 12 CD
You can move over terrain with this ability.
The jump lasts 0.125-0.5s based on distance to target area.

Heroic Abilities

1
[R1] Bola Shot
Fire a bola that connects on the first enemy hero hit, rooting them for 1.75 seconds, then pulling nearby enemy heroes within 5.5 range and rooting them for 1.25 seconds. Each hero rooted takes 250 (+4% per level) damage.
75 Mana. 80 CD
The bola has 7.5 max range, and takes 1s to reach it.
2
[R2] The Hunt Begins
Fire a pinning arrow that deals 125 (+4% per level) damage to the first enemy hero hit. For 4 seconds, that hero is slowed by 20%, increased by 0.6% for every 1% of their missing health, and the baseline movement speed from Hunter's Precision is 25% when moving towards that target.
50 Mana. 20 CD
The arrow has 9 max range, and takes 1s to reach it.

Talents

Level 1

[D] Hunter's Pursuit
Increases the Hunter's Precision bonus damage for basic attacks to 30%.
Quest: Each basic attack against an enemy hero increases this bonus by 0.1%.
[Q] Hunter's Scavenge
Increases the Hunter's Precision bonus damage for Aimed Arrow to 30%.
Repeatable Quest: Every 10th Regeneration Globe you collect increases this bonus by 5%.
[W] Hunter's Resolution
Casting Aimed Arrow within 2 seconds of casting Quick Dash causes it to benefit from Hunter's Precision even if it's not activated.
Quest: Hit two Aimed Arrows at one enemy hero within 2 seconds 50 times.
Mythic Reward: Permanently increase the damage of Aimed Arrow by 25%.

Level 4

Steady Barrage
Gain 20% attack speed.
[W] Improved Quilt
After casting Quick Dash, your next basic attack within 4 seconds deals 25% more damage.
[Q] Monster Tracker
+100% Aimed Arrow damage to mercenaries

Level 7

[Q] Numbing Arrows
Aimed Arrow slows the initial enemies hit by 20% for 1.5 seconds. Increase these values by 50% while Hunter's Precision is active.
[W] Swing Into Action
-2s Quick Dash cooldown. Refreshes the cooldown on takedowns.
[D] Hasty Resolve
-15% Hunter's Precision move speed penalty

Level 13

Giant Hunter
Basic attacks and Aimed Arrow deal bonus damage to their primary hero target equal to 1.5% of their max health.
[Q] Piercing Shot
Aimed Arrow pierces to hit one additional target.
[E] Skydraft
Casting Updraft refreshes the cooldown of Aimed Arrow.

Level 16

[Q] Sniper's Focus
After hitting an enemy with the initial hit of Aimed Arrow, fire a basic attack at them.
Resourcefulness
Heal for 20% of the damage you deal.
[Q] Weak Spot
Enemy heroes hit with the initial hit of an Aimed Arrow while Hunter's Precision is active lose 25 Armor for 2 seconds.

Level 20

[R1] Tracker's Arsenal
+3.5 Bola Shot pull detection range. The first enemy hero hit by Aimed Arrow while Hunter's Precision is active reduces the cooldown of Bola Shot by 5 seconds.
[R2] ...and It's Ended
If a hero dies within 4 seconds of being hit by The Hunt Begins, all allies participating in the takedown gain 25% move speed for 4 seconds.
[D] Never Stop the Chase
Hunter's Precision effects persist for 3 seconds after cancellation. (The move speed penalty does not carry over.)
[Q] Sniped Down
-15 Aimed Arrow Mana. -2s Aimed Arrow cooldown while Hunter's Precision is active.

Changelog

  1. 26/10/2026 - Rework of Hunter's Precision, Aimed Arrow, The Hunt Begins and talents. Addition of base stats. Linguistic and description adjustments. These changes should distinguish Freja from heroes like Hanzo and Valla, wherein inheriting a passive similar to Ana's Shrike will force her to choose between damage and range, or non-conditional mobility, while still enabling Freja to pick talents that fulfil the niches of either a burst mage, poke mage or DPS machine.
  2. 27/10/2026 - Another rework of The Hunt Begins. Nerfs to some base stats and bonus range of Aimed Arrow. Should nerf some of Freja's statcheck potential, on top of a new ult improving single-target pick potential.

There are many problems with this kit:
1)Having 7.7 Attack Range on a character with 2 mobility buttons is broken. It would be impossible to reach her.
2)I do not understand why she has Ana's [Aim Down Sights] mechanic when her crossbow does not even have a scope.
3)Being able to use [Aimed Arrow] during [Updraft] creates visual confusion. It would be difficult to tell where it will go because of the perspective.
4)[The Hunt Begins] is poorly designed. It forces you to use [Hunter's Precision] for it to do something. I also do not see how the name matches the effect.
5)[Hunter's Resolution] is not only a Mythich Quest, which is a problem, but also impossible to stack. It is literally impossible without other talents.
6)[Steady Barrage] is, surprisingly, overtuned. It makes you go above 2 attacks per second.
7)Why does [Monster Tracker] increase the damage against Mercenaries, but not Monsters, which is what the name implies?
8)[Hasty Resolve] makes [Hunter's Precision] even more overpowered.
9)[Giant Hunter] with [Steady Barrage] allows you to delete characters in seconds.

Overall, this is a very unhealthy kit. What also bothers me is that it does not utilize her being a bounty hunter, which is the biggest thing about her character.

I have some suggestions:
1)Increase Mana to 500, Mana Regen to 3, Health Regen to 3, and reduce Health to 1440. This is to make her more in line with other characters.
2)Replace [Hunter's Precision] with something that plays into her "occupation" in the lore.
3)Replace [The Hunt Begins] with something that allows her to deal with isolated targets. Her [Bola Shot] is already the AOE ability.

1) That range is only active when Hunter's Precision is. Therefore, forcing Freja out of such positions is key to deny her improved damage, which also scales more slowly than Valla's passive overall. Valla can reach up to 80% more damage from an attack (up to 140% with the talent, tho might be 110% on average), while Freja might maybe get this to 50% with her lvl 1 talent on average. Granted, it does not need stacking unlike Valla, so maybe some tuning would suffice. If things would be broken in the game, nerfing the range bonus to 1.1 could suffice.
2) She does not have a scope, but she has to slow herself down in Overwatch to even aim [Take Aim]. How else are you replicating the fact that she has to aim her alt fire? On a similar note, she does nothing related to actual bounty hunting in Overwatch either, she is just a sniper there.
3) Maybe.
4) That's the point. It makes you upgrade that riskier mode, or at least it is supposed to be risky.
5) You already get to stack it thanks to the talent itself, and it's a good thing imo that you are committed to the build from early stages, as then there is no random shift in expectations of counterplay as more talents are acquired.
6) Sounds like it's a beef with heroes like Valla and Sylvanas, who have high attack speed and damage modifiers attached to them (their passives). I can't say how bad this would be in practice, as she is only an internet concept, not a HotS mod. Maybe it is slightly overtuned, but again, it sounds like the concept of a high damage ADC is not what you just personally like.
7) because there are no monsters as a distinguished entity in the game? The name is symoblic, as mercenaries are usually monsters anyway.
8) It's meant for the AA build, so that you can use the range more often and still kite enemies. Y'know, enabling you to actually perform ADC duties and not be a knockoff Sgt. Hammer. Again, it might be that just 1.1 bonus range is enough.
9) Same as 6), random beef with characters like Valla, Sylvanas and Fenix.

Bola Shot deals AoE damage, but it's measly compared to The Hunt Begins. The trade of ults is between having actual utility and improving the reliability of your AoE damage, as the AoE from just Aimed Arrow is not that real in 5v5 combat. It's 2.5 range, which makes it rarely hit more than one hero at a time.

The kit might seem crazy, but what does Freja really offer? She is a selfish hero, offering basically only damage, personal mobility and waveclear. It's the same school as many other ADCs in the game, where they all excel at damage, sometimes waveclear and mobility. If anything, Freja might now be too similar to Fenix it seems, as she also has only one damaging basic ability like he does, and she 'switches' modes like he does, while trading have more baseline attack speed at all times with actually being less mobile without her abilities.

I'm glad I've read another person's comments that your way of commenting is condescending. You've not proven me wrong. Your statements are relatively shallow, as you are not trying to explain why, for example, over 2 attacks per second with/without Giant Huner is suddenly so bad. I appreciate the suggestions, but again, Freja does nothing related to bounty hunting in Overwatch, nor is Bola Shot a reliable source of AoE damage for me to redesign The Hunt Begins. At best you might think it is, because you get a more guaranteed proc of Aimed Arrow's AoE, which is still less than The Hunt Begins over time.

*Edit: I get what you mean with the no scope on Freja, as she doesn't have one, but if I go back to making only her Aimed Arrow gain more range to replicate that sense of aiming to fire a high-burst shot, then it's the Hanzo problem again. If I discard the concept entirely, then Freja is just Nova, but significantly better (as you have pretty similar hero killing, but also get waveclear innately on top of having utility now in both of your ultimates); she won't maybe one-shot a hero like Nova, but other heroes can do that while not sacrificing macro utility. If I also make her current Hunter's Precision slow her attack speed down, she then powercreeps Fenix basically. At this point it's a tough crossroad of design that if I stray too far away from, would make Freja basically not really Freja from Overwatch, and none of the Overwatch heroes so far have gone so far away from their Overwatch designs just to fill the not-yet filled bills in the game.
Hence, I fear she is doomed to being the way she is right now, so that she actually stays close to her Overwatch gameplay. It could be that her niches are just not needed to be fulfilled in HotS itself. Regardless, I hope you understand that no matter if she has abilities as though she had a scope or not, her niches would overcrowd the options of other heroes either way. Either Fenix with way better mobility, or Nova/Hanzo with way better mobility.

I dislike how similar this kit is to Hanzo, especially [Aimed Arrow] being the exact same as [Storm Bow]. Also, it is impossible to evaluate [Hunter's Precision] and [Thunder Circuit] without knowing how her Basic Attack work. I do think there is potential, but I really need to see the stats.

I can see why, though I do aim to replicate the gameplay loop of an Overwatch hero into HotS as closely as I can. This means that at least to me, in order to faithfully translate her gameplay loop, her Aimed Arrow might need to resemble Hanzo's Storm Bow. Or like in my previous concepts from over 5 years ago, I might need to bend the game's rules a bit to achieve that goal for any particular hero. I might see what I can do to differentiate Freja from HotS Hanzo, though I suspect there isn't much room for it without pushing her away from her source kit.
As for her basic attack, it's your standard basic attack.

Then why is [Aimed Arrow] so different from her [Take Aim]?

Quoted:
it's your standard basic attack

What other characters have this "standard" basic attack?
