Spectre Hero Concept

Gabriel Tosh is, like many characters from the Starcraft Universe, a little psychotic.

Formerly a ghost working for the Dominion, he turned traitor after a series of events exposed him to the harsh reality of the Dominion's systemic corruption.

Tosh was exposed to a psionic blast unleashed by Nova Terra on a training mission turned live-fire rescue mission. The blast had changed Tosh's psyche making him mentally unstable but also granting him total immunity to memory wipe procedures and psionic manipulation.
This lead to issues among his squadmates, until he'd eventually had enough and disappeared, faking his death to cover his tracks.

Shortly after he disappeared, Tosh came across the remains of Project Shadowblade, the Dominion's scrapped attempt to artificially create or expand psionic potential in human subjects. After meeting a former member of Shadowblade, Tosh restarted the program and began using Terrazine, a gas capable of amplifying psionic power, to produce more Spectres. He planned to use them to strike back at the Dominion by assassinating Mengsk, a plot that only failed because of the psychological instability Terrazine causes in Terrans and the timely arrival of Nova Terra.

Shortly after the failed assassination attempt, the station Tosh was training Spectres on was infiltrated by Nova Terra. After a short battle and a series of betrayals, Tosh was forced to abandon the facility. He took enough data on Project Shadowblade to rebuild it later, though.

Tosh started recruiting Spectres again after a short while. He struck up deals with James Raynor and provided the blueprints to Raynor's Raiders to build Spectre equipment. By this time Tosh had learned from his mistakes, and was more calm and collected, likely due to taking Jorium, another psionic amplifier, to balance out the side effects of the Terrazine.
Tosh was a formidable Ghost when he worked for the Dominion, and exposure to Terrazine has only made him more powerful. He is now a near match for Nova Terra in pure psionic power and has an arsenal full of odd abilities, including one that seems to be the psionic equivalent of Voodoo.

Tosh has two resources: mana and energy. Tosh's abilities drain his mana, while his cloak drains his energy.

My objective with Tosh was to design a new hero who has a stealth function but doesn't rely as heavily on it as heroes like Valeera or Nova. Tosh's Trait is an active cloak effect that drains energy, meaning it has a limited window of use.

Additionally, I wanted to create a stealth hero with more crowd control potential but less burst damage, since Tosh excels at sabotage and disruption in the SCU.

Tosh is designed to be either hit-and-run while alone or all-in with teammates. He has a lot of disruption, but his relatively low damage output and minimal mobility makes him best suited to reeking havoc and letting others clean up the rest. He has strong initiation potential, but his cloak is his only real means of escape.

Combat Trait

[Trait] Spectre Cloak
Cooldown: 5 sec.
Energy Cost: 10 per sec.
Maximum Energy: 100
Energy Regeneration: 10 per sec.
Regeneration Delay: 2 sec.
Tosh activates a cloaking effect, becoming nearly invisible. Spectre Cloak drains 10 energy every second that it is active.
Taking damage, attacking or casting offensive abilities, or cancelling Spectre Cloak ends the effect and energy drain.
Tosh has 100 maximum energy and regenerates 10 energy every second after Spectre Cloak has not been active for 2 seconds.

Mind Bomb Duration: 4 sec.
Damage: 150
Stun Duration: 1 sec.
Splash Radius: 3
Splash Damage: 100
Tosh applies a Mind Bomb to an enemy, revealing them for 4 seconds. During this time, Tosh can reactivate Mind Bomb to detonate it, stunning the target for 1 second and dealing 150 damage to them. Any enemies within 3 range of the target will also take 100 damage.
Tosh must be within 10 range of any enemy affected by Mind Bomb to detonate it.
Mind Bomb will expire if Tosh does not detonate it within 4 seconds. It does not deal damage or stun the target if it expires.
The cooldown of Mind Bomb will only start counting once any active Mind Bomb has been detonated.

Range: 9
Silence Duration: 1.75 sec.
Tosh fires a projectile in a straight line. The projectile will hit the first enemy Hero in its path, dealing 240 damage and silencing them for 1.75 seconds.

[E] Hallucination
Cooldown: 18 sec.
Mana cost: 80
Range: 6
Duration: 8 sec.
Health: 50%
Tosh creates a false copy of a targeted ally Hero that acts similarly. Hallucinations have 50% of the original Hero's health and deal no damage.
The Hallucination spawns from the targeted hero and lasts for 8 seconds.
Casting Hallucination does not break Spectre Cloak.

Secondary Abilities

[Active] Voodoo Doll
Cooldown: 60 sec.
Damage: 200
Stun Duration: 1 sec.
Tosh deals 200 damage to an enemy Hero and stuns them for 1 second.
Voodoo Doll has unlimited range, but Tosh must have vision of the target Hero and must have already killed them previously.

This ability requires the level 13 talent Voodoo Doll.

[Passive] Volatile Psyche
Cooldown: 60 sec.
Unstoppable Duration: 1.5 sec.
Stun Range: 4
Stun Duration: 1.5 sec.
Being stunned, rooted, or silenced causes Tosh to become Unstoppable for 1.5 seconds and stun all enemies within 4 range for 1.5 seconds.
Volatile Psyche's cooldown recharges 100% faster while Tosh is stunned, rooted, or silenced.
This ability can be toggled.

This ability requires the level 4 talent Volatile Psyche.

Heroic Abilities

Tosh channels and drains an enemy Hero's health, dealing 60 damage every second for up to 10 seconds. Tosh also regains 10% of his maximum mana every second that Consumption is active.

Mana Cost: 50
Damage: 250
Bonus Damage: 50% of current mana
Range: 8
Channel Period: 1.5 sec.
Tosh channels for 1.5 seconds, then deals 250 damage, plus additional damage equal to half his current mana, to a target.

Level 1


[Q] Cumulative Trauma
? Quest: Stunning an enemy Hero with Mind Bomb increases the damage they take from future Mind Bombs by 5%, up to 50%.
? Reward: After stunning 3 unique enemy Heroes at least 5 times each, Mind Bomb's stun duration is increased to 1.5 seconds.

[Q/E] Psionic Projection
Mind Bombs now last 2 seconds longer and can be detonated from any range.
Hallucination now has a global cast range.

[W] Bolt Cannon
Increases the range of Volt Shot by 2 and allows it to penetrate through enemies.
Volt Shot must be channeled for 1 second before it casts.

[Passive] Ocular Implants
Increases Tosh's vision range by 25% and basic attack range by 1.5.


Level 4


[Trait] Nyx Module
? Quest: Collect Regeneration Globes to increase Tosh's maximum energy by 2, up to 30.
? Reward: After collecting 15 Regeneration Globes Tosh gains 20 additional maximum energy and regenerates 10 additional energy every second.

[Trait] Diffraction Field
After Spectre Cloak has been active for 3 seconds, taking damage grants 75 physical armor for 3 seconds.

[Passive] Volatile Psyche
Tosh will occasionally become Unstoppable and stun nearby enemies when targeted by stuns, roots, or silences.

[Passive] Terrazine Addiction
Increases the effects of Regeneration Globes by 50%.
? Quest: Collect Regeneration Globes to increase Tosh's mana regeneration by 0.1 per second, up to 2, and health regeneration by 1 per second, up to 20.


Level 7


[Basic Attack] U-238 Rounds
Basic attacks ignore armor and shields and deal 100% additional damage to Structures.
Reduces basic attack speed by 25%.

[Basic Attack] Hollow-Point Rounds
Basic attacks deal 50% additional damage to non-Structure enemies with no shields over 3 seconds.
Basic attacks deal 33% less damage to Structures.

[Q]Feeble Minded
Mind Bomb deals 100% additional damage to Minions, Mercenaries, and Monsters.
Mind Bomb deals 50% more damage to enemies who are stunned, rooted, or silenced.

[E] Mind Games
Hallucination grants Unrevealable stealth to the target for 2 seconds.


Level 13


[Q] Psychic Shock
Mind Bomb's stun now applies to all enemies within its AoE.

[Q] Bad Mojo
Enemies within Mind Bomb's AoE take 40 damage per second and are slowed by 10% per second, up to 40%, for 2 seconds.
Detonating Mind Bomb slows enemies within the AoE by 80% for 1 second.

[W] Silencer
Casting Volt Shot while Spectre Cloak is active reveals Tosh for 2 seconds instead of deactivating Spectre Cloak.

[Active] Voodoo Doll
? Quest: Kill an enemy hero.
? Reward: Voodoo Doll can now be cast on that hero to deal 200 damage to them and stun them for 1 second.


Level 16


[Q] Anarchy
Detonating Mind Bomb applies an untalented Mind Bomb to nearby enemy Heroes.
Mind Bomb now automatically explodes after its duration is up.

[W] Mjolnir Rounds
When Volt Shot hits an enemy Hero, all enemies within 3 range take 80 damage and are silenced for 1 second.

[E] Spectral Image
Increases the health of Hallucinations by 100% and allows Hallucinations to last indefinitely.

[E] Telekinetic Ward
The target of Hallucination gains 25 armor as long as the Hallucination remains active.


Level 20


[Trait] Crius Suit
Spectre Cloak renders Tosh completely invisible and increases his movement speed by 30%.
Spectre Cloak drains 50% more energy.

[Passive] Shadowblade
Killing an enemy hero resets all non-Heroic ability cooldowns and grants 20% spell power for 10 seconds.

[R1] Insatiable Hunger
Consumption can be channeled indefinitely and deals 150% more damage if Tosh's mana is full.

[R2] Reabsorption
If the target of Psionic Lash dies within 2 seconds of being hit, its mana cost is refunded and its cooldown is reduced to 5 seconds.
? Repeatable Quest: If the target of Psionic Lash dies within 2 seconds of being hit, Tosh permanently gains 50 maximum mana.

love the concept
though, personally, i think that his Energy resource should have another use
for example, the more energy he has, the longer the duration of his abilities last (10 energy = 5%, up to an increased 50% duration on each of his abilities)
If he has 100 Energy, then Mind Bomb's duration lasts 6 seconds, and the stun is increased to 1.5 seconds.
though, it might make the need for his abilities to also cost Energy
not sure, just thought that energy should have another use than only being used for cloak

What about his combat stats like Health, Mana etc.

Maximum mana and regeneration rate for all heroes starts at 500 and 3/sec. and increases by 10 and 0.0975/sec. each level unless specified otherwise.

As for his health, that's one of those stats that I'm not really comfortable messing with. For a hero like this, I'd recommend somewhere between 1400 to 1700, but correctly gauging the ideal maximum health for a hero is difficult without playtesting.

So if all psionic abilities can't damage structures that means, all the protoss heroes can't damage structures as their attacks are psionic. Kerrigan's Maelstrom Ult is also a psionic attack. Don't you think?
