Karax

Khalai Phase-Smith

A hero who utilise a large array of advanced protoss weaponry to support it's team all around the battlefield.

Combat Trait

1
Solarite Core
Karax collect solarite to power the Solarite Core, empowering him and his abilities and enabling some of his talents.

(!) Quest: Collect Solarite:
-Collecting a Globe grant 3 solarite
-Each kill and assist on enemy heroes grant 5 solarite
-Each fort and bastion destroyed grant 20 solarite (30 on 2 lanes maps)

(!) Reward :
-Every 100 Solarite gathered, gain 8% spell power.
-At 250 Solarite, Solar Lance (Q) slows enemies hit by 25% for 2 seconds.
-At 500 Solarite, gain all 4 level 4/13 shared talent options (without the Solarite cost).

Primary Abilities

Q - Solar Lance
45 mana, 12 second cooldown per charge, 1.5 second cooldown between charges.

Send vector-targeted energy beams that strafes the target area that deal low damages to non-heroes and medium damages to heroes.

W - Warp Beacon
200 mana

Start chaneling near the targeted location to warp-in a building.
Changes your Q/W/E/R abilities to the different buildable structures. Selecting a structure to warp instantly end the channeling and warp it, restoring your abilities to normal.

80 second cooldown from the moment the structure is warp. You must uses 2 different buildings before returning to one you've already used.

W/Q - Khaydarin Monolith
Warp a Khaydarin Monolith near Karax that last until it is warped out after 80 seconds or it is destroyed by the enemy team.

The Monolith will fire at any enemy hero who casts a spell within it's 13 meters range, dealing base damage plus a damage multiplier function of the cooldown of the ability used by the enemy hero (the longer, the more damage).

W/W - Fleet Beacon
Warp a Fleet Beacon near Karax that last until it is warped out after 80 seconds or it is destroyed by the enemy team.

-Changes until it is warped out or destroyed the "Building Ability 1" button to the "Orbital Strike" active ability:
After a 1,5 second delay, inflict heavy damages in a 2 meters radius circle within 17 meters from the Fleet Beacon.

W/E - Observatory
Warp an Observatory near Karax that last until it is warped out after 80 seconds or it is destroyed by the enemy team.

-Changes until it is warped out or destroyed the "Building Ability 1" button to the "Hallucination" active ability:
Summon an illusion of the targeted hero within a 20 meters range from the Observatory taking 300% of its normal damage and dealing 8% for 15 seconds.
Can be recast to give basic commands to the illusion. The illusion will automatically copy spells used by the copied ally.
20 seconds cooldown

-Changes until it is warped out or destroyed the "Building Ability 2" button to the "Call an Observer" active ability:
Reveal an area in a 30 meters range from the Observatory for 5 seconds, reveal the stealthed heroes on the area for 3 seconds.
16 seconds cooldown.

W/R - Shield Battery
Warp a Shield Battery near Karax that last until it is warped out after 80 seconds or it is destroyed by the enemy team.

-Changes until it is warped out or destroyed the "Building Ability 1" button to the "Plasma Shield" active ability.
Give a medium shield to an ally within a 11 meters range from the Shield Battery that last 4 second or until destroyed.

-Changes until it is warped out or destroyed the "Building Ability 2" button to the "Barrier" active ability.
Grant 60 armor to every ally unit within a 10 meters range from the Shield Battery for 0,75 second.
30 seconds cooldown

E - Reconstruction Beam
24 seconds CD
80 mana

Increase for 40 seconds the health regeneration of the target by 20(+4%)HP/seconds.
For the duration of the Reconstruction Beam on a hero, it also regenerates 40% of the damages suffered ( calculated before mitigation by shield or armor) over 5 seconds.

Secondary Abilities

Building Ability 1
A placeholder active ability. It remains inactive while no Fleet Beacon, Observatory or Shield Battery is on the battleground.
When one of these buildings is warped, it turns into:

-Orbital Strike if it is the Fleet Beacon

-Hallucination if it is the Observatory

-Plasma Shield if it is the Shield Battery

And changes it's icon accordingly.

Building Ability 2
A placeholder active ability. It remains inactive while no Observatory nor Shield Battery is on the battleground.
When one of these buildings is warped, it turns into:

-Call Observer if it is the Observatory

-Barrier if it is the Shield Battery

And changes it's icon accordingly.

Cleansing Beam
Level 7 talent

Activate to make target ally Unstoppable for 1 second. Cannot be cast on yourself.

45 seconds cooldown. Cost 8 Solarite.

Structure Overcharge
Level 7 talent

Energizes target friendly structure, allowing it to attack nearby enemy units and granting an important shield for 12 seconds.

50 second cooldown, cost 15 Solarite.

Reclamation
Level 20 talent

Take control of the targeted enemy summoned unit (effectively destroying it instantly and summoning an identical one under your control).
If the target initial invocation spell had an effect upon reactivation, the Reclamation button temporarily becames it.

60 second cooldown, cost 12 Solarite.

Guardian Shell
Level 20 talent

Mark an ally hero for 3 seconds. Upon taking fatal damage while marked, the hero become unkillable for 1 seconds and restore over 3 seconds 30% of it's maximum health as life and the same amount as a shields lasting 7 seconds.

90 seconds cooldown, cost 20 Solarite.

Heroic Abilities

R1 - Scarab Drones
Hold 5 charges, collecting 3 Globes replenishes one, 4 seconds cooldown between charges.

Send a Scarab Drone to the targeted area within 9 meters where it goes slowly and explode for important AoE damage to enemies.
It can then be reactivated for 3 seconds to target an area within 7 meters around it where it goes slowly and radiate AoE healing to allies for an amount depending of the damages done by the initial cast.

R2 - Time Warp
90 seconds cooldown, 100 mana

After a 1,25 second delay, warps spacetime within the target area (5 meters radius) for 4 seconds. Enemy units within the field are slowed and have their attack speed reduced by 25%.

Each 0,50 second after the warping of spacetime and until the end of the effect, each enemy hero on the field grant Karax 1 Solarite.

Talents

Level 1 (Reconstruction Beam CDR and Solarite gain)

- E/Trait : Hitting enemy heroes with Solar Lance (Q) reduces Reconstruction Beam (E) cooldown. Damages from allies under Reconstruction Beam (E) grant Solarite.
- E/Trait : Damages suffered by allies during the effect of Reconstruction Beam (E) reduces it's cooldown. Hero damages from Karax grant Solarite.
- E/Trait : Autoattacks reduces Reconstruction Beam (E) cooldown. Healing done with Reconstruction Beam (E) grant Solarite.

Level 4 and Level 13 (Shared options among which 2 talents are chosen, one at level 4 and an other at level 13, focused on buildings)

- W/Q : While the Khaydarin Monolith is on the battlefield, Karax gain 0,5/1/1,5% spell power each time it hit an enemy hero up to 20/40/60%, the value depending on the amount of Solarite collected.

- W/W : While the Fleet Beacon is on the battlefield, every two times any enemy hero is hit by Solar Lance Within the Fleet Beacon Range, casts a free Orbital Strike at that enemy hero's position. Consume 50 Solarite upon learning the talent.

- W/E : Enemies damaging hallucinations have their damages reduced by 5% for 4 seconds, stack up to 25%.

- W/R : Shield Battery's abilities grant 10% movement speed to affected allies for 3 seconds.

Level 7 (General purpose utility)

- Increase maximum health by 8% and reduces death timer by 40% but looses 50 Solarite at each death.
- Photon Overcharge (Active)
- Cleansing Beam (Active)

Level 16

- Q : All Solar Lance(Q) charges are now returned at once on a 20 second cooldown.
- W : All structures spells and attacks gain 2/3/4/5 meters range, depending on the current Solarite amount.
- E : Reconstruction Beam (E) grant to it's targets between 0 and 20% bonus movement speed, based on the current Solarite amount.

Level 20

-Scarab Housing (R1) : Double the number of Scarab charges to 10 and refill all charges.

- E : When allies affected by Reconstruction Beam (E) have their health bar full, they build up a shield instead of healing.

-Reclamation (Active)
-Guardian Shell (Active)

Intention

My goal for Karax was to design a healer with a strong builder identity, can use a wide array of spells and weapons and have access in an extend to semi-global abilities to fulfill it's Spear of Adun master Phasesmith fantasy.
A secondary limitation i gave myself was to limit as much as possible the amount of new animations and arts needed for the hero, even though he have acces to a lot of spells and invocations...

The main challenge with builder or summoner heroes is to make them active enough so the skill and decisions of the player matter. I think that concept of building-based activatables is a good compromise that also reinforce the fantasy.

The heroic abilities choice is between getting a direct heal-oriented power spike with Scarabs, and Time Warp a utility-oriented spell that is a bit weaker but accelerate the Solarite harvest.

I'm not entirely satisfied with how Solarite interact with abilities and talents.
