Karax

Master Phase-smith

Background:

An expert in weapons, armor and ships. Karax is one of the most precise of protoss engineers. Over the course of the war against Amon, he was able to rise above his worker origins, serving as an important part of the war effort.

HP: 1770 (+4.5%/level)
Energy: 500 (+4%/level)
Attack Damage: 87 (+3.5%/level)
Attack Speed: 0.85
Attack Range 5.5

Concept Summary:

A hybrid support and specialist. Karax focuses on bolstering fortifications and boosting the combat performance of allies. His specialty is protecting allied towns from a massive push and countering split pushers with his trait and abilities, in essence he is an anti-specialist. When need be, he can lay down emergency defenses to secure a retreat location and even warp himself and allies out of trouble in an otherwise unfavorable team fight or enemy siege.

Combat Trait

1
Power Field
Ability Key: D
Cooldown: 10 seconds

Projects a large energy field on the target area that empowers nearby allied structures. Towers and forts gain an additional 50 (+5%/level) damage. Gates and walls gain up to a 25% max health shield that is generated over 5 seconds when exposed to the power field and decays over 10 seconds when leaving the field.

Power Field Radius is 10.

Primary Abilities

1
Orbital Strike
Ability Key: Q
Energy Cost: 50
Cooldown: 10 seconds per charge

Marks a target area for an orbital strike. After 0.75 seconds deals 125 (+4%/level) damage to a small area that deals 150% more damage to structures. Stores up to 3 charges.
2
Chrono Boost
Ability Key: W
Energy Cost: 65
Cooldown: 12 seconds

Increases the speed of the target allied unit or structure. Increases attack speed and movement speed (if applicable) by 30% for 5 seconds.
3
Restoration Drones
Ability Key: E
Energy Cost: 15/second
Cooldown: 10 seconds

Passive
: Two drones follow Karax that repair nearby structures and heroes for 60 (+4%/level) health per second. Structures are repaired for 150% more health

(Channeled Ability)

Commands both drones to repair a target. Heals for 150 (+4%/level) HP per second. Structures are repaired for 150% more health.

Secondary Abilities

1
Chrono Wave
Cooldown: 80 seconds

An untalented version of Chrono Boost is applied to all allied units and structures that lasts for 8 seconds.
2
Observer
Cooldown: 80 seconds

Warps in a stealthed observer for 60 seconds that reveals a large area around it and detects stealthed units. Can be commanded to move to another location using the designated ability key.

Heroic Abilities

1
Khaydarin Monolith
Ability Key: R
Energy Cost: 100
Cooldown: 80 seconds

Warps in a Khaydrain Monolith within a powerfield that attacks enemies from long range (9). Deals 125 (+4%/level) damage and lasts until destroyed. Becomes inactive when not in a powerfield. Only one (1) monolith can be active at a time

Upgrade: Orbital Ordnance
Calls down an untalented Orbital Strike on the target with each attack. Enemies that are attacked are also revealed for 3 seconds.
2
Solar Lance
Ability Key: R
Energy Cost: 100
Cooldown: 100 seconds

(Channeled Ability and Vector Targeting)

Interfaces with the Spear of Adun's targetting Systems and enables you to sweep an area anywhere on the battlefield with a beam along a line, dealing 200 (+4%/level) damage to enemy units struck by the beam and leaves a trail of fire that deals 200 (+4%/level) damage over 5 seconds. Can be used up to three times per casting. Deals 100% more damage to structures. If the ability is interrupted (either by reactivating the ability or getting stunned), each unused shot reduces the cooldown by 12 seconds.

Upgrade: Solar Flare

Increases the trail of fire width by 50% and beam length by 25%

TALENTS

LEVEL 1

[Trait] Khaydarin Capacitor - Buildings retain Power field's effect for 20 seconds after leaving the field.

LEVEL 4

[Q] Psionic Anchor - Increases Orbital Strike maximum charges by 2 but also increases charge cooldown by 3 seconds.

I had a similar concept a while back! Actually it's pretty damn similar to yours.

I Think this hero is great but it would be better to classify it as a support instead of a specialist.

According to the new description of Specialists, they are now described as Heroes of unconventional warfare. Since Karax is sort of an unconventional support hero, I think he is fitting to be classified as a specialist. :)

I think the second Trait Talent's cooldown needs to be increased to 2 seconds. Otherwise, the minions in the lane would continue to pile up unless someone like Kael'thas was there to clean them up in one attack. Even Artanis' Blade Dash or Cho'gall's Rune Bomb can't kill them fast enough.
Also would the other team gain exp for killing the minions if they just get recalled?

They wouldn't. This is a counter soak mechanic that delays xp gain for the enemy team. I'll consider increasing the cooldown and also add a cooldown that will not allow minions to be warped back again within a certain time.

That makes sense to me, though I still don't like it very much.
Good build otherwise. Not my ideal Karax, but definitely worth playing. Good work!

After careful consideration, i've decided to remove mass recall as it overlaps with hearthstone and medivac too much and the troll potential that it brings has been brought to my attention lately. As it previously had 3 defensive talents at tier 7, I will balance it out by replacing it with an offensive ability in Chrono Wave.

Fascinating. You mind if I share this on the HotS subreddit? I think you got something going on here.
