Maiev Shadowsong

Warden, Vengeance itself

Maiev Shadowsong is a night elf Warden and former Priestess of the moon. Along with her younger brother Jarod Shadowsong, Maiev played a key role in the battle against the Burning Legion during the War of the Ancients. In the aftermath, Maiev asked to be and was appointed the jailor of Illidan Stormrage and took on the mantle of leader of the Watchers. Chasing him across the seas, Maiev faced Illidan's Naga, her anger and lust for vengeance growing as her quest became more desperate. After Illidan rose to power in Outland, Maiev was imprisoned at the Warden's Cage in Shadowmoon Valley, where Akama and his Ashtongue Deathsworn served as her jailors.

Maiev allied with Akama and snuck into to the Black Temple during a Sha'tari attack, where she joined Akama and the adventurers he had rallied in the final battle against Illidan. Fueled by the desire for vengeance, Maiev struck the final blow that ended the Betrayer's life, but instead of relishing in her victory, she became a shell of her former self, admitting that with Illidan now dead, she was nothing. Driven utterly mad, Maiev is now a vigilante who wishes death to any whom she believes have wronged her, including Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage and Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind.

Combat Trait

1
Shadowmeld
Activate to gain Cloak when out of combat for 3 seconds. Taking damage, attacking, using abilities or channeling reveals you.

Primary Abilities

1
Shadow Strike
Deal X damage and slow enemy target by 80% for 1 second. Deals double damage when used from Cloak or within two seconds of being Cloeaked.
2
Fan of Knives
Deals X damage and reduces Attack Speed of enemies by 50% for 3 seconds.
3
Pursuit of Justice
Activate to gain 25% movement speed. For every second Pursuit of Justice is active, Shadow Strike has it's cooldown reduced by 1 second.

Heroic Abilities

1
Avatar of Vengeance
Summons an Avatar of Vengeance in front of you that strikes enemy target five times for X damage. For every second Avatar of Vengeance is active it's damage done and taken is increased by 1%. Can reactivate the ability to retarget Avatar of Vengeance. Unlimited casting range.
2
Death Sentence
Sentences target enemy Hero to death, preventing all healing done to sentenced Hero for 2 seconds. Nearby enemies take X damage per second.

Idea behind Hero Design

Warrior with a Cloak
I always enjoyed the idea of a Warrior with a Cloak and Maiev seems like a perfect fit as she is a Night Elf. Warrior with a Cloak is like a guardian angel, showing herself when needed to intervene and surprise enemy.

No escape
Another idea I used for Maiev was a relentless pursuit as Watchers are basically a police force of Night Elves. That is the reason behind interaction between her Pursuit of Justice and Shadow Strike.

Slayer of Illidan Stormrage
Then an idea of perfect counter to Illidan emerged, she already counters his slippery escapes. Her Fan of Knives is designed to prevent a big portion of Illidan's damage and her second Heroic ability, Death Sentence, also counters his self-healing ability.

Clarification of abilities

Shadowmeld
I made it activable ability because having a passive Cloak for a Warrior seems contradictory to the role. This way you can decide whenever you want to front up for your team or gank an enemy player.

Shadow Strike
For now it works like a Sonya's Seismic Slam, without damaging enemies behind. Idea behind this ability is simple, she needed a basic damaging ability and I wanted to include a Cloak related component.

Quick talent ideas:
- Double damage within 2 seconds upon activating Pursuit of Justice
- Root instead of slow
- Shadowstep, short range teleport to bring back her Blink ability from Warcraft III

Fan of Knives
Simple AoE damage and attack speed slow, working just like a Muradin's Thunder Clap. However I thought about Knives being an AoE projectile, stopping at first target hit. I guess it kind of makes sense, but I am not sure if it is possible.

Pursuit of Justice
In practice it works like Arthas' Frozen Tempest. You turn it on and it lasts as long as you have mana. I wanted to include some other cool mechanic as the ability is definitely powerful, but seems very boring. It also gives you this active playstyle - chasing enemy heroes down. You are a cop in the end, right?

Quick talent idea:
- You take 10% less damage while active

Avatar of Vengeance
A slow moving summon akin to Jaina's Water Elemental or Kerrigan's Ultralisk. The increasing damage the longer it lasts is to fulfill this idea of lust for vengeance and the unlimited range is to time it to deal a massive amount of damage, but it also means it will die faster as well. A strong zoning ability, the cooldown will start once it is dead or it does it's damage.

Level 20 Talent idea:
- Avatar of Vengeance can be attacked only by the target it is chasing

Death Sentence
Basically Uther's Divine Shield in reverse. I also included an AoE damage similar to Burning Rage radiating out of the "sentenced" target.

Level 20 talent idea:
- All the healing received by the sentenced target will heal you instead for the double the amount

This is really interesting concept. I thought about Support hero (healer especially) with stealth (always ready to help your team with a little risk) but I never had an idea about invisible Warrior - and I must admit that the concept of "guardian angel" is awesome.

Your concept is also a proof that it's definitely possible to make Maiev with abilities much different than Zeratul's ones, and still loyal to our favourite Warden's theme. It's interesting how you decided to resign Blink and create Pursuit ability instead of this - I think that this ability fits her perfectly, and also resolves problem of "being just like Zeratul". And every time that someone will say me "no, they will never make Maiev in HoTS because it's impossible to make her abilities feeling unique" - I will show him your concept.

I will be waiting also for talents. :)

80% slow seems kind of high for a basic ability, even if it is only for 1 second. Li Li's water dragon is a 70% slow for a few seconds, and that is a heroic ability. Leoric's slow can be at most 60% for a basic ability, but it has to be talented. I think Shadow Strike is good for a slow, but I don't think it should be 80% right off the back. You can certainly have a talent for it that brings it up to 80%, that'll make it good.

You are probably right.

I wanted it to be a more severe slow as she lucks a stun (on purpose), it is a single target and close range ability. The numbers I presented definitely aren't final, it is just to present a general idea.

Also I think it would be a good idea to make her an assassin instead of a warrior. Not all assassins have to roam, case and point look at the Butcher. He's a great front line with a nice set of health (even if his defense isn't all that, he isn't squishy like Illidan or Zeratul are) and I feel like Maiev could have that kind of potential. The reason I say this is you have to look at her as a character. Back in Warcraft III, the Warden hero she is based off is a heavily agility based her, fast on their feet to catch and decimate other heroes with a deadly combination of blink, shadow strike, and fan of knives. Maiev herself is a well trained hunter (not the class) with exceptional skill in tracking down Illidan no matter where he went and catching up to him.

I specifically didn't want her to be an Assassin. If she was a one, she would be very similar to Zeratul and maybe even Illidan. As I said, I always enjoyed the idea of a Warrior with a Cloak mechanic and she seems like a perfect fit.

Honestly, I don't think Warden being an agility based hero is a good argument to make her an Assassin. For example Paladin was a strength based and Uther is a Support, or Far Seer was a Intellect based and Thrall is an Assassin.

Actually if you look closely almost every Hero in HotS has one main role and a secondary weaker role. Uther can be built into a (weaker) tank, even Thrall can be. Leoric can be a solid Specialist and Tyrande a quite strong Assassin. I think making her Warrior doesn't take the fantasy away, she definitely could be a bruiser like Sonya. However I think we had quite a lot of Bruisers lately and I wanted her to be more tanky character to personify her determination and persistence.

In fact I think making her Warrior is a good thing from a Lore point of view as well. If you think about it, she was a formidable force with her army of Watchers. However once her lust for vengeance took over her and she went more or less alone, it was her downfall. That's why I also don't want her being an another ganky Assassin, she is supposed to help her team track down and kill lonely Heroes.

Also, why would she have that awesome plate armour of hers? :D

Anyhow, that's just my two cents trying to help out. I honestly do like the concept, Maiev has always been one of my favorite WoW characters (and even the Warden hero in WCIII) and I can see a lot of potential with her.

Thank you.

I kind of wanted to avoid giving her stun as I think it will be too powerful, considering the interaction between her Shadow Strike and Pursuit of Justice.

80% slow is pretty significant already and I had a relatively short cooldown in mind for Shadow Strike. I put root as a talented version of Shadow Strike to present a counter for Maiev's aggressive playstyle. When you can't escape, you better give a good fight instead.

Also her being a Warrior, I don't like the idea of her roaming alone and ganking players. Zeratul already does that. I want her to be slightly more tanky at expense of lower damage so she would rather help others to score kills.
