This might be beyond noob, but those who wonder must ask :)

usually you have to be in sight to gain xp, but what about the locust and monstrosity, can they gain either way?

i noticed locust getting me xp when i was in base but no heroes in sight, but not sure if it is because i had the camera on or by default, or maybe a locust nest nearby does the trick?

You do not gain exp because of your sight. You gain exp by having your hero in range of the source (usually determined by your Basic Attack range) or having a physical impact/presence (summons and long range abilities). In the case of Abathur, your summons (locusts, monstrosity, and ultimate evolution) will soak exp and so will your symbiote.
