He does have great heals. I feel like the rest of his kit is weaker than other supports, though. His root grows slowly enough to give people time to get out of it which often means you need to rely on catching them in choke points or using it in the middle of a team fight. I like supports that can hard lock a target down without so much work as it makes it easier to protect your back line from enemy assassins jumping in. His moonfire is a good dps tool, however, and can be teched to slow the enemy.

I think malf is a bit boring in comparison to other supports...

This is just personal opinion, but he feels way to slow for a fast paced game like HotS.
His root takes too long to land and your team could already be losing by the time it has grown fully.
His heal is very good though. Moonfire doesn't contribute enough if a fight is quick. I do like his heroics, even though it still feels like LiLi heal is better... I do like the silence though seeing as how much impact it has on fights and would like to see it be used more.

On the other hand Malf has a very nice heal and I don't think the community is abusing his free mana enough yet (look at Keeper of the Light from Dota 2). His root does do well in small choke points where enemies have no where else to go and moonfire I guess is okay and as I said I like silences.

I still feel like a support needs to be able to defend his weaker teammates when an enemy goes for them. Some supports have debuffs which allow for the removal of the threat or stuns that fulfil the same goal. (Even LiLi has the ability to debuff with blinding winds)and all malf can do is heal his teammate and try and land that slow-mo root while burning mana with moonfire.

Malf isn't bad, I just would've liked a more interesting kit to allow for a more unique support.

His mana return is really nice. (Dare I say it) He plays very much like the old soraka which was my first LoL main. Hots is much more suited for roaming, so I wonder if there's possibility to abuse his mana spell by just going from lane to lane. Even some double(or even tripple!) specialist pusher comp that he can keep fueling.

Its important to take note, that if you have Malf on your team, he will be the main target to eliminate.

In regards to people unhappy about the speed of his roots, it plays a dual purpose as it is a soft cc.

Wide AOE, interrupts battle movement and flow for opposing team and can force those retreating in to a different path by positiong the growth ahead.

It's a nice skill.

Got to agree with sunshine trooper,

I use his roots to not only, well root people, but mostly I use it to zone. It's not a bad area denial ability. I find that it is so unlikely to root people on the outer edges of the root expansion area that you might as well use to to zone deny.

I really like this skill, I think it is under appreciated.

Yes, it has it's uses. Entangle feels weak compared, however, with other supports. Rehgar's totem has similar use with innate combo ability with lightning shield and can be upgraded for a very powerful initial snare. That means it can zone and is easier to catch people with. The downside being the cast range. Tyrande's stun has a smaller radius but is way more powerful than entangle when it hits and has immediate effect upon landing. Uther IS a zoning tool. The things I like about Malfurion over other supports don't have to do with his CC (except silence which I suck at using).

The thing about Malfurion that everybody estimates is his consistent (if you can land his moonfire) damage, Rehgars slow is just a zoning tool until 16, Uther can be avoided fairly easily and Tyrandes heroic is a heroic. .And he gets all the utility talents to protect his allies with.
