It's mainly for mobile support.

I've never had my laptop crash from loading videos, but it does slow down page load a fair bit depending on the day.

On mobile though (and I have a pretty new phone now) a page full of videos pretty much just prevents you from viewing that page. More than 1 is less than ideal, more than 2 is pushing it, more than 3, well, you're probably going to crash.
