Spells Top
Q
El'Druin's Might - Bread and Butter of this build. Always use this to escape during the early laning phase, unless you know you can get away with using it as a harassment tool. During team fighting, you will be using this to initiate and separate enemies from their teams, to trap them for an easy kill, or to keep your teammates alive by ensuring their safety with a forcefield protecting them from melees or enemies from getting close.
W
Righteousness - Great spell that will allow you to sustain in lane against trades and avoiding massive amounts of damage taken. 200 damage is A LOT.
E
Smite - Your most spammed spell available to you. Use it to harass, use it to help your teammates or yourself. Speeding up your teammates to ensure a kill or using the speed up to escape is the greatest support spell you can give to your team. Mobility is everything in this game. The faster you get to places, the more opportunities open up.
R
Judgement - I choose Judgement because Sanctification is just horrible. You can easily be CC'd by anything and everything. With Judgement, you are able to initiate fights for your teammates to follow up on the caught target OR to stop an enemy from channeling their spells. I use this spell on their enemy DPS that is caught out of position or when we want to focus them down. A great spell to also help teammates or yourself escape. Sometimes I have used Judgement on a far away target and then Q and E'd further away.
Talents Top
Tier 1 - Purge Evil - EASY choice. Your E ability is on a much lower cooldown which enables you to harass more. Plus, you will be using your Q to escape or to set up an engage. Not to just get damage out later on in team fights.
Tier 2 - Angelic Absorption OR Amplified Healing - As Tyrael, you are the tank, if you are in a 1v2 lane, you can get away with using Amplified Healing for late game (if, you have a healer). 30% increased received healing is huge late game seeing that you will be tanking a lot and in the front lines taking a lot of damage.
But, if you are in a 1v1 Lane, you can also use Angelic Absorption to help you lane better by gaining health while you trade with the enemy. With a shield that gives 200 absorption AND a healing over time on you, you will be winning trades very easily.
Tier 3 - Battle Momentum - This is an easy pick. More autoattacks = More spells able to cast sooner. You will be constantly spamming your spells to help block off enemies and getting kills or speeding up your teammates.
Tier 4 - Judgement - Easy pick over Sanctification. As mentioned in the above Spells section.
Tier 5 - Burning Rage - There are many choices in this Tier that can be viable. But Burning Rage takes the cake. Doing constant DPS while in the middle of a fight is crucial, especially as a tank. You are surrounded at all times and in melee range. Someone is always going to be burning because of this talent.
You could use Cast Aside to be more of a support role and help disrupt the enemy team. I have used this sometimes. If there are lots of channeling spells on the enemy team, then by all means, this is a great talent combined with Holy Ground for your Q.
Tier 6 - Holy Ground - AMAZING TALENT. Able to cast a forcefield in the middle of the fight can DISRUPT your enemies, and sometimes even trapping them in the process. Practicing and positioning these Q forcefields will make a great Tyrael stand out from a good Tyrael. Another good trick to use with the Q forcefield, is to drop a perfectly timed Holy Ground on a merc circle to avoid Zeratul from VP stealing it.
Tier 7 - Angel of Justice - Due to the removal of Resurgence, this is the next best thing. Lower cooldown and longer range. Pretty basic.
Laning Phase Top
When you are laning, you will want to usually be in the mid lane or outside lanes that will let you 1v1. If the match ups are unfavourable, as noted above, try to do 2v1s or just go to another lane and let someone else handle the lane. But, if the lane is in your favour then you should 1v1 the opponent and harass them out of the lane. By forcing them to use the healing well early, you are able to set up an easy gank for your teammates or a good push for an objective (ie. the towers/fort/map objectives/merc camps)
You will want to use your E ability to harass as much as possible. People tend to stick close to their ranged minions and thus enabling you to hit the wave and the hero for a win-win. You are pushing the lane AND you are hurting them in the process. Never use your Q to harass unless you are safe and you have lots of mana. You will always want to save your Q to evade a gank or to dodge a spell.
I sometimes like to use my Q into them and then bait them to use a spell so I can reactivate my Q to land behind them or on top of them and then use my E to hurt them while giving myself a boost to chase.
If you time the harasses well, you can push the lane and roam to another lane to help secure a kill OR you will be able to do objectives like collecting the seeds on the Garden of Terror map. By harassing them early, you are forcing them back to their fountain to heal or they will be too low to engage you when you are doing objectives. If they hearthstone back to base, they will be missing out on exp which will help your team get to level 10 sooner for a big team fight/push (huge advantage, always want to rush level 10).
Mid Game Top
Now, during the mid game, this is where you will be roaming a lot and usually the first few towers are down and map objectives have been taken. Your team will be roaming to fight at objectives and your main job at this point is to either jump on the back line and kill their squishies with another DPS so you can zone them out while giving your shield and speed boost to your teammates (which is usually the main objective as Tyrael) OR you can play defensive and help peel by giving boosts and shields to your backline to help them live longer. Everything is situational, but most of the time you will be setting up the fights and bodyblocking to ensure kills are secured.
When you Q into the fight, make sure you are always stutter stepping (aka, attack and move, attack and move). This ensures that you are body blocking while also maintaining the same relative speed and direction as your opponent so they cannot escape so easily. Don't waste your W unless you are being focused or your teammates near your vicinity are being hit.
Do not be afraid to tank objectives such as merc camps or the Terrors in the Garden of Terror. I usually have a friend who plays Sgt. Hammer and we are able to do the first Terror easily with only 2 people. Kiting and letting your spells/autoattack come off cooldown while evading a few hits from the Terror is important.
Late Game Top
As you can see, for my Tier 6 talent, I chose Holy Ground. With HG, you are able to DISPLACE enemies. THIS IS HUGE! You can land a good Q and then when you reactivate the Q, you will create a Forcefield that cannot be passed by the enemy. Heroes like Zeratul who get the Shadow Assault ability (which allows him to keep blinking onto you every autoattack), will not be able to hit you while you sit inside of this, BUT you can hit him with spells and autoattacks!
Another nice thing about this is that you can protect your teammates from enemies. A well placed forcefield can block off an entire attack. Tight maps like Garden of Terror, Cursed Hollow, Haunted Mines (in the mines), you can essentially block off the entire path and the enemy will have to watch their front line or backline get massacred without being able to help.
You can also use this forcefield to BLOCK enemies from escaping a fight. By positioning the Q properly, you can block them from retreat. Sometimes, if there is a tiny gap and they can squeeze through it, you may need to stand there to thicken the "wall". Remember, you are there to ensure kills for your teammates.
A very well positioned Q forcefield can TRAP someone against a wall. I have done this many times to someone and they cannot move or do anything. They are forced to use a gap closer/blink to get out, and if they do not have it, it is a free kill.
Comments/Suggestions Top
Please, let me know if you have any comments or suggestions. This is my first guide I have ever written, and I think even with only 35~ games played with Tyrael, I am able to say with confidence that I know what I am doing with this hero.
Up to date with current Thrall Patch.
