Threat Hero Notes
1
Murky Vault away from Shark + Ult, enjoy the free experience. Spray can also end up revealing his egg, whether you meant to or not. Take advantage of that!
1
Abathur Your W takes clear of his hats on waves, and god forbid he gets found by you. Free experience courtesy of space worm.
1
Muradin Dodge his stun, watch him cry.
1
Stitches DON'T GET HOOKED. His hook is easily dodged with Vault. From there on, it's just kiting and poking.
1
The Lost Vikings Lmao. Even if someone knows how to play this right, most vikings will be dead after three auto attacks each.
2
Gazlowe Currently, Gazelowe provides little threat outside of his turrets. Outsmart his turret placement, don't stand in his stun, and enjoy the free experience.
3
Nova Nova's burst can be pretty scary, but she can be easily outdamaged based purely on Executioner Valla's W to auto attack capability. The only thing you need to be wary of is Triple Tap, as Valla has no true means of stopping it besides hiding behind teammates or structures. 1v1 at your own risk/confidence.
3
Arthas Not really an issue, most of Arthas' engage is easily avoided with Vault, and Executioner build makes him pretty victimized to the insane burst provided by Manticore/Frost Shot/Executioner.
3
Brightwing The greatest adversity that Brightwing provides to Valla is polymorph. Beyond that, this is not really a foe to worry much about, as Strafe's range will easily conquer BW's typhoon.
3
Chen Easily kiteable, and falls victim to the same Manticore/Frost Shot/Executioner combo that strikes fear into other tanks alike.
3
Tychus Easily kited, knockback easily dodged with vault, no escape from Strafe. Make sure to juke his grenade knockback before you Strafe, as the knockback will cancel Strafe with a full cooldown.
4
Uther Another easily kiteable counter, but don't let yourself get stunned. Uther will not be afraid to engage you, as he is rarely alone, and has a powerful melee stun. Keep your distance and rock Manticore's stacks like no one's business.
5
Illidan Illidan is a pretty notorious enemy to most ranged Assassins due to his body blocking mechanics. While they still pose a threat, the Executioner build allows for some pretty steady kiting when you correctly combo your W into your E with coltraps. Illidan will more often than not flee from a duel encounter, but be wary of both of his ultimates, as they are still a threat.
5
Nazeebo While not entirely a counter to Valla, Vault will not take you out of his cage if you get trapped, which can leave you susceptible to a pretty heavy amount of damage. Make sure to be mobile, and maneuver around his wave clear, and you should be alright.
5
Anub'arak While not necessarily a damage threat (outside of his ult), much of his engage is avoidable. Be conscious of his knock-ups, and avoid getting solo-engaged, and you should be alright.
5
Azmodan Similar to Nazeebo, it is easy to get lost in the drive to kill and neglect the wave clear that Azmodan provides. If not careful, his minions can easily overpower you - especially due to Azmodan's immense HP pool.
5
Diablo Based purely off of his knockback and throw, you want to keep your distance from Diablo. If he manages to catch you out of position, it is almost inevitably death. However, with the right kiting and Coltrap practice, you can overcome his engage best case scenario.
5
E.T.C. Similar to Diablo, you'll want to watch for ETC's ability to isolate or catch you out of position. He is still kiteable with proper Coltrap practice, but do not underestimate the power of the Rock God's engage.
5
Kerrigan Kerrigan does a ton of damage, but she has to get in range to do so. Her W (the AoE stun) is easily dodged and takes a very long time to actually proc. So long as you dodge her drag, kite her freely and watch the salt-laden tears flow.
5
Li Li While not an immediate damage threat, LiLi can very easily counter even the beefiest of Strafe damage with her AoE heal ult. Make sure to outplay her Heroic Ability and keep constant pressure on her if she is caught out of position, and she will not be able to keep up with the healing.
5
Rehgar Rehgar, as a melee support, can often be found out of position in many team fights. While his shield and beefier HP make up for small mistakes, Executioner Valla can apply fatal pressure to a Rehgar that finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Try to time Strafe to kill targets before he can top them off with his Ult.
5
Sonya Simply: Do not get engaged. Sonya puts out a lot of damage that - even if it doesn't kill you - can take away your presence and effectivity in a fight.
5
Tassadar Tassadar mechanically poses little threat to Executioner Valla. Just be sure not to be caught in a duel and have him pop his Ult. That's not a situation you want. Vault out, wait for it to expire, then punish.
5
Tyrande Tyrande's damage is deceiving. Try not to let her apply Hunter's Mark to you, as her teammates will surely take advantage. Fight from the back line, and Vault in to the fight only if you find her out of position. Practice predicting her moon bolt's, as avoiding the stun will allow for the application of pressure that her one heal can't cover.
5
Valla Executioner Valla does pretty well against Executioner Valla. I have found this build to trump other Valla builds, as Coltraps can doom an enemy Valla who Vault's in for a kill. Punish them for greediness - you have the superior damage.
5
Zagara Similar in wave clear mechanics to other specialists. Just dodge the slow moving wave clear and don't engage until her minions expire - she has nothing but her ult to escape you, and most of the time you can still vault past it.
6
  No Threat
7
Tyrael Tyrael is a very engage-heavy tank, and a high-damage one at that. His Judgement is a great way to get behind your team's frontline, and often times pick you off. Coltraps will help with his many speed increases and intense pursuit, but definitely try to keep him away from you.
7
Falstad Falstad, although strong in damage and versatile in mobility, can be outplayed simply on the laurels of Vault. Make sure to time your Vault and coltraps to counter his Barrel Roll, and stay out of range of his skillshots. Even the beefiest of Right Click Falstad's can be overcome by proper Executioner Valla gameplay. Do not underestimate the skill required to perform against a skilled Falstad, however.
7
Sgt. Hammer Hammer is another beast entirely. Her laning while in siege mode can keep you at bay for a pretty good amount of time. Your best bet is clearing wave, vaulting in, and landing your skill shots to line up the most damage in the shortest amount of time. Then, watch her speed off, gain your footing once again, and repeat.
7
Thrall A decent matchup, Thrall's threat comes mainly from his root to Windfury combo. Avoid the root, and you'll do just fine.
8
Malfurion Not a damage threat, but Malfurion's AoE heroic allows him to keep his team close and heal straight through Strafe. Time your abilities and try to catch him out of position. The more pressure you apply, the harder it will be for him to perform. For effective team fights, you'll want to prioritize Malfurion as a target while running Executioner.
9
Jaina Jaina's range and slows are a problem from the moment the game starts until it ends. Make sure to dodge blizzard, and avoid as many cone shots as you can. While Valla can do scary damage with the Executioner build, you don't want to chance getting perma-slowed by a Jaina when in a team fight. Rarely will even the most sultry of Coltrap skill-Vaults save you.
9
Zeratul Unlike Nova, Zeratul's a stealthed assassin you need to worry about. Even if you vault away with Coltraps, and he gets snared, he can flash into you, pop rewind, and punish you heavily for overconfidence. Don't underestimate him, play smart, and try to pull him out of stealth with your W before he can open.
10
Raynor Raynor's "E", despite your intense burst, makes him a very difficult hero to counter - especially if they take the right-click champion build. Be cautious, and use vault to your advantage. Despite his survivability, Raynor doesn't have the escape potential that Valla does.
10
Sylvanas A difficult laning opponent when building Follow Through. Sylvanas' constant damage can often times outscale Executioner in the early game, so do not be deceived by her specialist appearance. She can't summon minions or wave clear like other specialists, but she will give you a spanking to remember if you don't respect her early game. Catch her out of play late game, take advantage of her squishiness, and show her who's damage is in charge.

INTRO & BACKGROUND Top

Guide is current as of Kael'thas release, 5/12/15.

Hey there!

The name is Cam. I'm a WoW player of 8 years, professionally if you count paid PvP rating services, although the current state of the game has lead to my recent withdrawal of subscription. However, this lead me to Heroes! I dove quickly into the game, and thought I'd begin publishing guides on the ways I've established success in my gameplay. I take great joy in helping others better themselves, build confidence in their playing, and develop their own strategies to maximize their gameplay! With that being said, this is my first guide, and it's by no means a necessity! I encourage people to toy with Heroes and find what build works for them - this is purely what works for me. Feedback, of course, is encouraged!

I'm currently rank 22 for the Hero League preseason, with a 2300+ MMR.

This guide is for Valla, a strong ranged assassin. Playing competitively with friends, I worked extensively on producing a build that puts out the largest amount of damage, matched with sustain uncharacteristic to many damage carries. This "Executioner" build allows for insane team fight damage, great use of range, and versatility that contributes greatly to team mechanic. As I have applied this build to Hero League, I have found it effective on every single map available in the current game.

Kick back, relax, and take a look into Valla, the Glorious Executioner! (Sit down, Draven.)

PROS & CONS Top

Valla - The Glorious Executioner

PROS

- Insanely high, sustained damage.
- Great range, allows for leniency in skill shots.
- High ability damage, high basic attack damage.
- Mobile, solid escape.
- Great for AoE damage and team fight utility.
- Works for all maps.

CONS

- Not built for dueling. (Although skilled players can still duel effectively with the build.)
- Dependent on team structure. Do not run this build if you're in a quick match with 4 assassins and a support; you're gonna have a bad time.
- Squishy. Kill them before they can kill you.

TALENTS Top

Here's a rundown of the "Executioner" talents, and the reasons you'll want to take them!

COMPOSITE ARROWS

As you will read later into the talents, this build relies heavily on targets being hit by Valla's W. Landing the attack is not difficult, as the cone-like spray covers a large area. This talent will allow for an even greater range, and greater effectivity for hitting as many people as possible in one spray. Supplementally, the increased range allows for good wave clear versus even the toughest of specialist lane matchups.

MANTICORE

Manticore is another vamping talent, which allows for strong early game engage that grows in power as the rest of your talents come into play. Manticore also heavily bolsters your auto-attack damage, so you end up with great sustain stacking the damage from both your abilities and your right-click prowess. Simply lining up 3 successful auto attacks on a target early game can cause an enemy to run tail between their legs back to their fountain, and it only gets better as the game progresses.

CALTROPS

In all honesty, when I explain this build to friends, I leave this talent tier pretty open to suggestion. You can't really take anything on this level of talents and go wrong with Executioner, but let me explain why I take Caltrops. Many people will Vault forward to try and secure a kill, where I find there to be a more effective use for the ability. In an engage while running Caltrops, you can position yourself either at the top or bottom of a lane or jungle fight, and follow your target closely. If they try to escape, Vault across the path of your target, leaving a large line of Caltrops that will slow your target exponentially and allow for the secured kill. Not to mention the obvious application of Caltrops when using Vault as an escape; an unthinking foe will pursue you post-Vault straight into a line of 3 Caltrops, which will apply a slow that could be their death (as we'll see later in the talent explanation).

HEROIC ABILITY: STRAFE

Strafe is the Heroic Ability of choice for the Executioner build. While many will argue for the use of her Heroic Ability stun, the damage and range on top of the mobility provided by Strafe makes you a whirling storm of pain in any team engage. Vault can also be used while Strafing, which allows for the same mechanic aforementioned by cutting opponents off with your Caltrops and dooming them to the full duration and hurt that Strafe has to offer. It's incredibly short, minute-long cooldown also means more usage, and more sustained damage.

FROST SHOT

At this point in the game, the bulk of the Executioner build is almost complete, and the numbers are already pouring in. Frost shot, combined with the increased range provided by your tier 1 talent Composite Arrows, allows you to slow potentially an entire team in a full on engage. The range of the spray will slow any and all who fall victim to the massive cone, and allow your team to gain better positioning as well as securing kills with brutal proficiency.

CRITICAL: EXECUTIONER

This is where Valla's Executioner build comes to its peak. This talent will increase all of your damage done to slowed, rooted, or stunned targets by a whopping 40%. Let us revisit our choices up to this point. Right off the bat, we see the application of having the increased cone area of your W, and the application of the slow provided by Frost Shot. Anyone in that cone will take a passive 40% increased damage while under the effects of that slow, which may even allow them to fall victim to a cutoff with your Caltrops, only lengthening the passive 40% increased damage. With Manticore stacked on top of this, every third auto attack of yours directed at a slowed target will deal a MASSIVE 90% increased damage. Finally, we look at the insane burst provided by Strafe. The Executioner build allows you to spray an entire team with Composite Arrows and Frost Shot, and chain that directly into Strafe for one of the most deadly opening bursts in the game. Often times you'll find the entire enemy team pulling back due to the uncontrollable damage output provided by this combo. Regardless of what you combo it into, Executioner accounts for the CC the rest of your team puts out as well, which means you'll rarely find yourself outside of that passive 40% damage increase AT THE VERY LEAST.

LEVEL 20: VENGEANCE

The final nail in the Executioner coffin, Vengeance only adds to the insane damage output of Strafe, adding spontaneous penetrating bolts to the ult that also take the 40% increased damage effect provided by Executioner. Once you've reached this point, if they haven't already lost, line them up... and watch them fall.
