The Ever Unpopular Top

I feel as though Abathur gets a lot of **** from the community. Just today I was playing with people who asked me why I would play a hero that just sat around and did nothing. Obviously, they had never played Abathur, but most importantly, it's plain crumby that he gets such a bad rap when I have some amazing games and stats with this hero. I leveled him to ten in less than a week, which is a break neck record for myself personally.

I digress...

So why build an Abathur that's non-hat? Well, mostly because I have so much fun on this build. I can still hat people up, and assist where necessary, and know that my locusts and Evolved Monstrosity are out getting work done on lanes.

Level Strategy Top

Level 1

I grab Survival Instincts because this build revolves around buffing locusts and spawning them. They are great lane pushers, and the stronger they are the better. While I am hat mode, these little critters can make an impact in lane; especially an empty one when objectives pop up.

Level 4

Now we are grabbing Ballistospores, and this gives us global range and access to any location on the map, regardless of Abathur's physical location. This comes in very handy to this strategy, one I like to call Sneakathur. Abathur is generally a very active hero and is most effective when bouncing all over the map, and helping his fellow team mates in between. Now you can lay mines in all the best hidy holes across the map, allowing you to pop in, drop some locusts and pop out.

Level 7

Because this strategy is a pushing build, I grab Networked Carapace. Once I grab this talent, I can generally hat around and pop the carapace, making the minions in that lane even more effective, and the effect persists even after I have disengaged.

Level 10

This is where the important lane pushing tool comes in. We grab Evolved Monstrosity for a few reasons. First of all, he has no duration, and will remain on the field as long as you keep him alive. He can also move on his own, or be directly controlled through hatting. This is great because you may want to set him up to start clearing a lane, and then go help your team members. And lastly, he can consistently gain attack power (up to 400 dmg) as he kills minions. I have taken out heroes from the other team using an Evolved Monstrosity. He is really effective, especially if you are in a good enough situation to keep him alive (baby sitting).

Level 13

At level 13 we pick up Bombard Strain in order to give our beefed up locusts another buff. They do great damage and take less damage in the process, because now their attacks are ranged. I've used just a few of these critters to take out enemy turrets.

Level 16

At 16 we're picking up Locust Brood. Now the global range on the map is really going to come in handy because you will want to drop a Toxic Nest in a nice bush near the enemy and once you pop up there, you drop three locusts using Locust Brood. These little guys are pretty strong at this point, and can really get work done on lanes that need pushed. Meanwhile, you will want to dig somewhere else, wait for the CD to reset and throw some more out there.

Level 20

And last, but certainly not least, is Locust Nest. My favorite thing to do here is Deep Tunnel to a well hidden area close to the enemy core, and set one of these guys up. Unfortunately you can only have one next active at a time, so if you set down somewhere else, the previous nest will be destroyed. However, this is a great way to confuse the enemy. Set up a few Toxic Nest's around it and watch the pain ensue as enemies dive in, thinking they finally caught that pesky Abathur. Meanwhile you are still spawning locusts elsewhere on the map.
