Why Illidan is the ultimate threat? Top

My skill set will make you highly mobile. As long as you keep your distance with enemy heroes, you are fairly safe. However, only the gap closer "Illidan" can get you. My basic skill set can make your Sylvanas teleporting "twice", but Illidan can close the gap "three times". The last option is to choose your level 20 (Tier 7) skill to "Bolt of the Storm" which allows you to teleport again by press 1, then it will even this up. However, since it's a lv20 skill, games sometimes end before you hit it, also by choosing "Bolt of the Storm", your siege damage get reduced. No matter what you choose, do pay extra care when you play against Illidan.

Intro Top

Greeting, I wanna introduce my build of Sylvanas that I found extremely outstanding on siege performance. Based on her basic combat trait "Black Arrows", she has very strong cc control on minions. For every pvp game I have played, I nearly always had the best siege damage record and as well on average hero damage by comparing with teammates. The reason I enjoy this build is that HOTS is heavily relied on map features which is different with League of Legend (if you play LOL as well, you can understand the difference). Even though winning on hero killing sometimes determine the game, but the weight is definitely lower than winning the map features. Even if your team lose on hero killing, you still have fair chance to win the game from map features. Simply say, my build will make your Sylvanas "one of the causes of winning" your games, and even if you lose, you won't be the one to be blamed, unless you intentionally fight with few against many.

Here is 3 pictures of stats on Flickr

Map: Sky Temple
Map: Tomb of the Spider Queen
Map: Haunted Mines
Map: Cursed Hollow - in this game, my team played from losing in early and mid stage to a winning game at last.

I will upload some losing games when I encounter one. I did saved some losing replays in the previous game version and it wouldn't let me re-watch and take pictures. No matter winning or losing, you will see that the siege damages are just superior than others most of the time.

Abilities Top

Please do spend some time to read her abilities thoroughly. Since Sylvanas' basic trait is minion cc, every arrow she shoots (including basic attack and abilities), minions will be stunned.

"Q", "Withering Fire" provides 5 shots without spending mana and refill every 2 seconds. I usually long press Q on all kinds of fightings(both on players or minions) until I used up all 5 shots. If both minions and heros are near by, the default setting will aim heros first.

"W", "Shadow Dagger" travels around nearby target, including all buildings (towers, gates, castles, but not base), which is a very strong skill to hold your lane or to avoid damages from cannon and castle when you apply pressure in enemy base. However, between cannon and castle, you need minion as a bridge for the dagger to travel.

"E", "Haunting Wave", not only have damage effect on targeting path as well cc effect on minion, also teleports you if you click E again. This is the essential skill that makes you highly mobile with certain skill set I recommend, also such set refills your "Q" right away after you complete the second click on haunting wave(teleport effect). I highly recommend you to turn "Smart Cast" on (under setting) to have faster action speed for this skill. This skill requires some practice to play well. If you are familiar with Ahri in LOL, you can get used to it faster.

"R", you can choose "Possession" or "Wailing Arrow", but usually choose Wailing Arrow because it's more useful for team fights and Possession becomes useless since my build already makes you extremely strong on siege damage. Wailing Arrow's damage isn't very high, don't rely on it for one shot kills, but it provides mute effect.

Skill Set Top

For faster memorizing and clicking skills, the skill sequences are 3 3 1 1 3 1 3. Here, I will explain why I choose such build for siege damage, and in fact, it's not bad with PVP either, your heroes damage will maintain above team average still because this skill set performs excellent sustain output as well. I will still provide alternative choices if you want to put more focus on PVP. But since there are other guides focus on PVP, I won't put too much weight on explaining my PVP options(color code in orange). And keep in mind, these PVP alternatives will significantly decrease your siege performance which makes you no difference with other heroes.

Tier 1 (lv 1): The third skill "Barbed Shot". You deal 200% extra damage on minions when you use "Q". This skill let you clean up minions a lot faster. If you want to do pvp, you can choose the first skill "With the Wind", which provides longer range on "Q".

Tier 2 (lv 4): The third skill "Ranger's Ambush". This is an essential skill that refills your "Q" while you cast "E". (NOTE: it requires second click on "E" to teleport, then to refill "Q". If you don't do the second click to trigger your teleport, it won't refill. However, "E" is sometimes dangerous especially if your banshees fly into enemy heros, so DO CHOOSE YOUR SECOND CLICK WISELY!!) Also, when you have earned this skill, you can SOLO all mercenaries without your teammates' assist.(Of course slow at early game, but will get faster and faster) Even for pvp, I won't recommend other alternatives since this pick recharges your "Q". (I know most pvp builds recommend Envenom, but I personally favor mobility more than dots.)

Tier 3 (lv 7): The first skill "Unstable Poison" makes minions explode when you kill them.(including basic attack and "Q") This will cause chain reaction and speed up your siege performance. For pvp, you can choose "Life Drain" which heals you with "W".

Tier 4 (lv 10): The first skill of your "R", "Wailing Arrow". Notice that it will mute enemy heros when the arrow explodes near them, which is a good skill control in team fights. Also, you can do second click to control when to make the arrow explode earlier.

Tier 5 (lv 13): The third skill "Splinter Shot" gives you extra damage (18.75 and +2.25 per level) to a second target. It seems not many but since your have a lot of "Q", it's many. Again, it enhances your siege performance, also when you try to clean up mercenary spot containing 4 mobs, at this level, they become almost harmless to you. For pvp, you can either choose the first skill "Overwhelming Affliction",(slow enemy heroes movement speed) or "Evasive Fire", (increase your movement speed).

Tier 6 (lv 16): The first skill "Windrunner". Again, this is an essential skill that pairs up with "E" and Tier 2 skill. It makes you to be able to "teleport twice (within 2 seconds)" and "recharges your "Q" again" (Add up 15 shots of "Q" in total, that's a lot of damage for both siege and pvp). At this stage, you can clean up all types of Mercenaries in less than 3-5 seconds ALONE. Even for pvp, this is a must have skill, no other alternitives.

Tier 7 (lv 20): At this level, there are three options.
1. I first recommend the third one "Fury of the Storm". It adds up both pvp or siege damage. With this skill, your Sylvanas is the nightmare to all NPC targets including BOSS, and you are NOT WEAK on PVP either.
2. The second option is the fourth skill "Bolt of the Storm". You get another teleport by pressing 1, which increase your survival chance. Sometimes I would choose this skill when I play against Illidan depending on how good the player plays Illidan.
3. The third option is the first skill which enhances your "R". I rarely choose this since I focus on siege damage.

Ability reminder based on the skill set I recommend above:
The "Q" provides somewhat burst if you want to surprise your enemy when they are low on health. However, since you don't get to choose the target of "Q", so pay attention when to use it.

The "W" is a good ability when you try to deny enemy's push, it stuns the group of minions and mercenaries when they stand near by each other. Also it's good to avoid getting shots by cannon and castle when you try to push enemy's gate/buildings.

The "E" is a good gap closer/uncloser, you can use it to escape or chase your opponents, also it refills your "Q" after you make the second click (complete the teleport) so you can use it for cleaning minions/mercenaries or following up killing if enemy hero is low on health. However, you probably will need some practices to find out the direction and good timing on using it against heroes. I suggest you to start from versus AI games first to get familiar with the skill set.

The "R", don't expect to kill unless enemy heroes have no health, treat it as half cc since it mutes enemy to prevent them casting skills to assist your team fights.

Pros and Cons Top

Pros:
- High Mobility (able to juke enemy heroes or flee away if you use "E" wisely)
- Extremely High on Siege Damage (Usually nearly twice as many as the second highest of your teammate)
- Advantage on almost all map features (mercenaries, collecting gems/coins/skulls...etc)
- Excellent sustain damage since you can get 15 shots of "Q" at least, but they are not high burst damage and you don't get to choose the target

Cons:
- No CC skill on enemy heroes
- No high burst damage, hard to instantly kill an enemy hero. Your "Q" provides somewhat burst fire but not as good as other assassin heroes
- Slightly weaker on PVP especially 1v1 (however, you can still maintain above average on total heroes damage, just usually not the best)

Conclusion Top

Once again, this is a siege build that I find satisfying both siege and pvp needs although slightly weaker on pvp. However, since in HOTS, you win the game by winning the map. I feel this build has more advantages, and you still can easily find other guides in Sylvanas board even if you want to focus on pvp skills. Practice this build couple times, you will find that you are 99% the highest on Siege Damage (I only lost to a siege tank once while she was under siege mode all the time), and 40%~50% highest on Heroes Damage when versus AI.

In versus players mode, you will need to always keep distance in order to provide sustain fire power. Sylvanas is very squishy, so avoid getting caught. Also this build is so strong especially at the late game no matter your team is winning or losing. If your team is winning, you can easily take all mercenaries alone (besides boss, you still need your team to kill it) while your teammates keep applying pressures. If your team is losing, you have super strong power to stop their minions and mercenaries invasions under few seconds (especially after level 16). This reliefs your teammates' pressure on defending base and gives them more opportunities on picking up enemy heroes.

For maps:
Since my build is weak on early stage when PVP, the map of Cursed Hollow and Sky Temple require your team to capture certain objects. You will feel pvp disadvantages in early and mid game.(before level 16) And for the map of Tomb of the Spider Queen, it's a interesting map that its map feature is so weak that even though you need to collect gems, more pvp is involved with this map. Also for map: Haunted Mines, this map is relatively small, more intensive pvp situations would happen more often. For these four maps, try to assist your teammates more often when they need a good team fight, or just use PVP build if you feel more comfortable to.
