Greymane - A Decision-Based Hero Top

Hey there Heroes! Welcome to my very first guide. I'm Fadeslayer (Fade for short), a hardcore Heroes player, sometimes just purely for fun but most of the time to win. Today, I'd like to talk to you about Genn Greymane, Lord of the Worgen. There are many different ways to view this hero, and of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

However, I choose to see Greymane as several things. First of all, he is a decision-based hero. His ability to sacrifice his ranged safety for absolutely absurd burst damage to both a single target and in a small area makes it very important for a player to know when the time is right to press that "E" key. For this very same reason, I see him as one of the most versatile heroes in the game, able to adapt to several situations. Need some poke range damage to whittle someone down? Stay in human form. Wanna get greedy and go for the team wipe? Unleash the inner beast.

Let's go over some abilities to get started.

Trait Top

Curse of the Worgen

Traits are what makes each hero stand out, and it's no less for Greymane. In human form, your attacks have a moderate range and each attack deals a pretty large amount of damage. When you use one of your heroics or Darkflight, you'll shapeshift to your deadly worgen form, which causes your already hard-hitting basic attacks to hit 40% harder at the cost of your ranged safety.

Human Basic Abilities Top

Gilnean Cocktail

Your only real straight-up damage ability in human form. This ability has a number of uses. Its decent range makes it ideal for poking a team or clearing minion waves without having to sustain enemy damage. It takes a bit of skill to aim it the way you want, but it's sheer amount of damage makes the payoff well worth it. You almost always want to use this on-cooldown, provided you'll hit something and get value out of it.

Inner Beast

You know what they say about your inner beast. Embrace it. This ability is the bread and butter of your Greymane kit. Your high-damage basic attacks will now be shot and swung faster, greatly increasing your overall DPS, provided you can keep it active. Keeping Inner Beast active can make or break your hero damage and total damage potential. More about that when we explain our first tier talent choices.

Darkflight

This ability is the key to unlocking the potential of Greymane. Knowing when and when not to use this ability will singlehandedly dictate whether or not you are a great or terrible Greymane player. In a teamfight, this ability should be used to either deal the finishing burst to the enemy team and secure one or a few kills, or when your tank has the enemy team on complete lockdown during a Mosh Pit or the like. In a 1v1 scenario, Darkflight can be used to chase or zone your adversary out of a lane or objective. Beware, because you essentially have to be sure you can survive 5 seconds for your Disengage to be ready. If used at the wrong time, your kill-securing efforts could just cause you to look like you fed the enemy team free XP.

Worgen Basic Abilities Top

Razor Swipe

This ability deals a moderate amount of damage while launching you a small distance forward. The damage is dealt to all enemies in your path as well as those close to the sides of the path. This ability has several uses. First, and perhaps most obviously, it can be used to deal AoE damage and get in the middle of a fight. Its short cooldown allows you to move between heroes and keep up with fleeing ones. Razor Swipe is also a great kill-securing ability because of the dash mechanic. Second, it can be used to dodge abilities like Blizzard and Flamestrike. Third, it can be used as a mini- Disengage, allowing you a little escape while remaining in worgen form. *IMPORTANT* I have found that damaging an enemy with this ability resets your basic attack cooldown and will cause one to trigger right after the ability, provided you are close enough to your target.

Inner Beast

Essentially the same as human form, except you're technically getting more damage and value from the ability in worgen form.

Disengage

This ability only has three uses. It can be used as a dodge, an escape, or as a VERY risky chase tool. I would resist the urge to chase with it unless you absolutely know you have a way out. You have absolutely no escape mechanics in human form because you shouldn't need any. Its range is similar to that of Darkflight and serves its purpose as expected.

Talent Choices Top

I'm a firm believer that there are some talents that cannot be passed up. For this hero, however, i don't experience that. I'll go over my talent choices in-depth soon.
