1
Abathur Abathur is not much of a threat to Abathur.
1
The Butcher Vision with your mines can stop a lot of his ganks as your team will know where he is and slows are extremely annoying for him. Also like most heroes he is not a threat if you are safe.
1
Artanis Not a threat if safe. His Ult is annoying but it shouldn't kill you.
1
Thrall Not a threat if safe. Hates mines and loses many 1v1 he would win otherwise against hatted targets of his.
1
Johanna Not a threat if safe.
1
Diablo Apocalypse is annoying but not deadly.
1
Li Li Not a threat at ALL. Just make sure she doesn't get you out in the open and you should always be fine. It is what Li Li is healing that is dangerous.
1
Li-Ming Li-Ming is not particularly good at laning.
2
Cho Cho can clear your minion waves, but that is about it.
2
Arthas Not a threat if safe. His ultimate will stun your locusts.
2
Rehgar Not a threat, just do not let him catch you out in the open.
3
Anub'arak Not a threat if safe. Can use burrow to get to you behind gates so be careful.
3
Leoric No threat, but watch for his repawns with mines.
4
  No Threat
5
The Lost Vikings Completely out soaks you early game. Not a big threat otherwise.
6
Jaina Can burst you over gate if you are not careful and can clear an entire minion wave of yours with her W. Other than that she is not a threat to you.
6
Azmodan Out lanes you 1v1 and can out siege you if his team supports him. Not a threat otherwise.
7
Xul Xul out lanes you 1v1 and can clear many of your minion waves quickly and turn them against you. However, unlike Murky he is annoyed a lot by mines and is generally seen in teamfights more than Murky. However, if you see Xul it is probably best just to find a new lane
7
Falstad Very much of a threat to a riskier Abathur playstyle as he can jump quickly to where you are and kill you. However he cannot jump to you when you are protected without dying himself. Play carefully and your mines should be more annoying to him than he is to you.
8
Tyrande Can snipe you with Owls and force you into the core if she is good enough at aiming and knows where you are.
8
Murky Can out lane you 1v1 and harshly mitigates the XP bonus that Abathur usually gives before level 10. If you see a Murky it is best just to find a new lane.
8
Illidan Can jump over gates with evasion and can use The Hunt on you if you are caught out. Be careful with I
9
  No Threat
10
Nova Can burst you down instantly and can cloak past your towers to kill you. Be careful and make sure to place mines around you to catch her cloak.

Dehaka Arguably the best current Abathur counter in the metagame.

Level 1 Talent Choices: Starting Point Top

Abathur's first Talents are arguably his most important ones. These talents that you pick at level 1 can often decide how you play the rest of the game as Abathur. Be careful when picking this talent as there really is no best talent here, and all of the talents just depend on what situation you are in.

Pressurized Glands (Good): This ability is very good when your team lacking DPS or for combat builds, and is usually combined with the other spikes talents because they have great synergy together. Great talent however does lose out on potentially other better talents in this level.

Survival Instincts (Great): Survival instincts great for mine and siege builds, and has excellent synergy with the locusts talents at level 13, 16 and 20. I would recommend picking this talent when your team is lacking siege. However, if you already have a siege and you think you could potentially benefit more from having the other talents in this tier, this talent is not always need.

Regenerative Microbes (Very Situational): Regenerative Microbes is not a great talent for Abathur. It can be useful somewhat on healing builds and monstrosity builds, however both of those builds are largely outclassed. Monstrosity needs a buff badly and healing builds are only viable only if you have no healer or a Tassadar. Not to mention the healing falls off very quickly and is not good late game. Only pick this talent if your team is lacking sustain. This talent is good in quickmatch.

Envenomed Nest (Great): Envenomed Nests are overall a great choice for Abathur. The added damage from Envenomed Nest work great with the other mine talents at level 4 and level 7. Mine Build is very good on maps like Dragon Shire, Tomb of the Spider Queen, and Blackheart Bay. Mines are Abathur's main source of damage and vision after all.

Top

Level 4 Talent Choices: Mines or Damage Top

Like of Abathur's talents this pick is very important. All of these talents are great in their own situations, however there are talents that are better than others. This talent pick will largely depend on what you picked for level 1.

Prolific Dispersal (Great): Prolific Dispersal is a great talent for Abathur. Mines overall are just stellar, so a talent that gives you them faster is always going to be great. That said, generally this talent is used on Mine Builds which are in my opinion Abathur's most consistent build. Pick this talent if you believe the other talents in this tier are not going to be as useful, or if you are on a smaller map that has good places to hide on.

Ballistospores (Situational): Ballistospores are a situational talent for Abathur. This talent is good on siege builds and can be viable on mine builds on bigger maps, but the extra range is not always need and picking Prolific Dispersal is often better on mine builds. Only pick this talent if you are on a large map or you are playing passively behind towers and think you can benefit from the extra range.

Sustained Carapace (Bad): Sustained Carapace not a very good talent for Abathur. Overall the carapace talents are in need of a buff and generally rely on a talent that has a long cooldown. This is not necessarily a horrible talent for Abathur in itself, it is just largely outclassed by the other talents in this tier. Only pick this talent if you are going for a full carapace talent build, which is only viable if you team has no sustain.

Adrenal Overload (Good): Adrenal Overload is a good talent for combat builds. The extra 25% swing speed on Symbioted targets is amazing and combines great with many characters like Illidan, Thrall, Valla, and Butcher. That being said generally mine builds are more consistent as mine builds help with siege, damage, and utility. Pick this talent if you have a hero on your team that can benefit greatly from it, otherwise go for a mine build for damage instead.

Top

Level 7 Talent Choices: Utility Top

Level 7 is a very interesting tier. These talents are all situational, and often will not always depend on what you picked before it. Every talent is this tier is viable to some degree even if it may not seem like it. Pick these talents depending on what your team needs.

Needlespine (Great): Needlespine is great talent choice for most Abathur builds. Pick this talent if you don't have a strong need for the other talents in this tier, as a 60% damage increase is very good when you fire out all 3 Stabs.

Vile Nest (Great): Vile Nest is the best talent for Abathur in this tier. The slow can be annoying for the other team, as it largely can cripple their rotations. Combine this with the mine build, the most consistent build for Abathur and it is a great talent. Pick this talent if you are going a mine build, or you think the slow could be very good for your team.

Networked Carapace (Situational): Networked Carapace is good for heavy siege builds, that's about it. It is not good on mine builds and not good on combat builds. Only pick this talent if your team is lacking siege and Ballistospores and Mule are not needed.

Calldown: Mule (Situational but Good): This talent is good on maps like Infernal Shrines or Garden of Terror. It can be useful on siege builds and can be a strong counter to many other sieges. Pick this talent against heroes that siege over time like Murky or pick it on maps where there are long periods of times where people are not siegeing like GOT or Infernal Shrines.

Top

Level 10 Talent Choices: The Ultimate Evolution Top

Ultimate Evolution (Amazing): Ultimate Evolution is by far Abathur's best ultimate.

1. Pick this Ultimate in most situations as it is amazing in teamfights and can be used to cancel out the player down that Abathur brings. This Ultimate is better than Monstrosity in most ways. It is the better Ultimate on siege builds, Abathur locusts already bring enough siege to Abathur and the Monstrosity is not needed, and it is a better Ultimate on mine builds, as it has far more Utility than the Monstrosity. It is worth noting that even on combat builds, Abathur should always clone instead of hatting if in a teamfight.

2. Try and clone heavy damage assassins, particularly burst assassins like Jaina or Li-Ming, as they will bring the most damage into a teamfight for the short time that the Ultimate Evolution is up. Jaina is an absolutely amazing cloning partner as she has great burst and provides frostbite for the other Jaina. Other great cloning targets include Diablo, other heavy cc tanks, melee assassins like Butcher, and finally healers like Morales. Clone tanks when you need an objectives defended and you need crowd control,
clone healers when you team is weak, and clone assassins in most other situations.

3. In general, most of the time you should be picking Ultimate Evolution, the only situation where I can see the Monstrosity as a more viable is on combat builds when you are lacking siege and have a lot of teamfight potential even without the Ultimate Evolution. However, most of the time you should run a siege build on Abathur if your team is lacking siege, and you shouldn't even be running a combat build if you already have amazing teamfight potential.

Talent 10 Choices: Evolve Monstrosity Top

Evolve Monstrosity (Horrible): Don't pick this Ultimate. Monstrosity is just so ridiculously outclassed by Ultimate Evo that is not even funny. Just like don't pick this Ultimate. It really is not good.

Getting that information aside, Monstrosity is not actually that bad with in itself. It is just outclassed by Ultimate Evolution by quite a bit. First off, Monstrosity has a HUGE 90 second cooldown. This means you will almost be able to get two Ultimate Evolution out by the time you get 1 Monstrosity. Which is INSANE for an Ultimate that practically invites death. Monstrosity has literally no means of escape and zero 1v1 potential without stacks, not to mention that it is visible on the minimap to literally everyone. Combine this with the fact this thing will run into towers and kill itself means you have to babysit it constantly for it to not die.

Currently this thing is in need a buff badly. Even giving you the ability ping it on the map would be amazing. Or even just give the thing better AI. I mean this Ult will literally run into the enemies core on Towers on Doom, and just die to their towers if you don't babysit it.

Losing out the teamfight potential of Ultimate Evolution is just not worth it, and babysitting this thing is a huge waste of Abathur's time. Most likely if you picked this Ult and won, you would have won anyways without it. Pick this when you would like to have fun, just don't pick it in hero league. It has its uses, it just has too many downsides.

Level 13 Talents: Siege or Damage Top

This is arguably the most debatable talent tier for Abathur. This is because most of the talents in this tier are very similar to each other with 2 locusts and 2 damage talents in this tier, and because of how similar the talents are, what talent you pick is largely just dependent on the situation and personal preference. All of the talents in this tier are good, the talent choices really just depend on what your team needs and what talents you like better then others.

Assault Strain (Situational): Assault Strain is good, but faces heavy competition Bombard Strain. Use this talent if you find your locusts in the front line as a locust can wipe out an entire minion wave. However, generally Bombard Strain is better because wave clearing is already done a lot by your mines. Pick this talent if need a lot of creep waves cleared quickly. Has good combination with Locust Brood.

Bombard Strain (Great): Bombard Strain the best talent in this tier. It is great for mine and siege builds as the extra range gives your locusts much more survivability, as they stay in the back lines not getting hit by the towers and minions. Combine this with Locust Brood and the extra damage that the talent brings and you can get a good backdoor siege going. Pick this talent on siege and mine builds like Assault Strain, but pick this talent if taking down towers is more important than clearing lanes.

Spatial Efficiency (Good): Spatial Efficiency is great on combat builds. Even though it faces heavy competition from Soma Transference, this talent gives you an extra stab charge which will always be useful. Only pick this talent however if you think you could use the extra charge more than the other talents in this tier. Combines greatly with Needlespine.

Soma Transference (Good): Soma Transference is very similar to Spatial Effciency. Both are best used on combat and mine builds and what you pick here is dependent on what you picked for Level 1 and Level 7. If you did not pick Pressurized Glands for Level 1, you should get Spatial Efficiency for combat builds instead. If you did pick Pressurized Glands at Level 1, you should get this talent. As a general rule, pick this talent and Pressurized Glands if you are using a combat build on a melee assassin, while pick Spatial Efficiency and Needlespine if you are using a combat build on a ranged assassin.

Level 16 Talent Choices: Locust Brood and Envemoned Spikes Top

These talents for Abathur can be amazing or situational. What talent you pick here is a combination of every talent you picked before. This talent choice is generally not that hard to choose, but if you have a hard time choosing I would just recommend picking either Locust Brood or Envemoned Spikes.

Envenomed Spikes (Great) : Envenomed Spikes are an amazing talent. Getting a 40% slow on all spiked targets can be great in a team fight and on melee combat builds, this talent is great for securing a ton of kills. Not only this is one of the best talents in the tier, but it is has great synergy with the other spike talents. Pick this talent on combat builds for melee assassins.

Adrenaline Boost (Very Situational) : This talent is good, it just doesn't stack up compared to the other talents in this tier. Like the I said before, the Carapace talents are just generally not very good. Carapace has a HUGE 12s cooldown, which is a lot compared to a 6s cooldown on his Spike Burst, and a 3s cooldown on Stab. Only pick this talent if you are running a full combat build on a ranged assassin. This talent combines well with Hivemind.

Locust Brood (Amazing): Locust Brood is an absolutely necessity on Siege Builds and one of the best talents on mine builds. Spawning 3 Locusts out of nowhere is great for siegeing and taking camps, as locusts are Abathur's main way of siegeing. Also this talent is great when combined with the locusts talents at Level 1, Level 13, and Level 20, when at Level 13 locusts become great at taking down towers safely, and backdooring. Pick this talent almost always when running a siege build, and if running a mine build pick this talent when your team needs siege>damage.

Volatile Mutation (Trash Talent): don't pick this talent

This talent is trash is almost every single way possible. It is outclassed completely by Locust Brood when it comes to siege potential, and outside of siegeing this talent is not good at all. Plus if you need more team fight ability as Abathur pick Envenomed Spikes instead. If you won with this talent you would have won the game otherwise.

Top

Level 20 Talent Choices: Final Talents Top

Abathur's level 20 talents are very similar to his Level 16 Talents. For the most part you should pick Hivemind or Locust Nest, however the 2 heroics are also viable. Pick here what your team needs and make sure the pick works with the build you are doing as well.

,
Evolutionary Link (Situational) : This talent very situational. This talent gives your Ultimate Evolution target a shield of 20% of their health that refreshes every 5 seconds. Compared to Hivemind this talent is useful when you are not in teamfights, but in 1v1s. So pick this talent when your team is either split up or uncoordinated. This talent works well in Quickmatch.

Evolution Complete (Very Situational): Like Evoltuionary Link this talent is good, however most of the time generally Locust Nest is better. Not to mention I do not like Monstrosity and I believe it is a heroic that is not that good. Only pick this talent if you plan on babysitting your Monstrosity and keeping it alive for stacks.

Hivemind (Amazing) : Hivemind is arguably one of the most defining talents for Abathur. This talent gives Abathur 2 Symbiotes which is great in team fights because the extra Symbiote gives you 50% more damage as Abathur. Pick this talent on combat builds when your team is well coordinated. Also this talent works amazingly with Adrenal Overload, as well as all of the Stab and Spike Burst talents.

Locust Nest (Amazing) : This talent is Abathur's best Level 20 talent for siegeing. Locust Nests spawn a Locust every few seconds which is great for adding lane potential while not having to risk yourself being in a lane. Pick this lane when running a siege build almost always, as it is an excellent talent.
