About Abathur

Abathur is a character introduced in the Heart Of The Swarm expansion of Starcraft 2. He’s the Zerg equivalent of a super intelligent computer. He is the mastermind behind the constant adaptation and optimization of Zergs. Even though he is rather fragile, the Evolution Master makes for an important and powerful ally.

Abathur is a very unique and fun character. He can change the course of the game without ever leaving the comfort of his own base.

However, playing Abathur effectively can be a hard challenge. Reading this guide should get you ready for action though ;3.

Pros and Cons Top

High Skill Ceiling

AKA « High Skill Cap ». There’s almost always room for being even more effective. An experienced Abathur can pull off very impressive plays and make a big difference in a match.

High Skill Floor

Abathur is the only hero that demands you to know the layout and flow of each map as well as the abilities of every hero just to play him at a basic level. He also has unique mechanics.

Strong Global Presence

Abathur can teleport anywhere on the map to capture objectives or soak experience. He can set traps to gain vision anywhere on the map, leaving no safe zone for the enemy. He can assist any ally, from anywhere on the map, at any time with Symbiote. Abathur is EVERYWHERE.

One less body for your team

Abathur’s body is very fragile, so it’s generally risky to come out in the open to collect Gems/Coins or to capture points like the Temples in Sky Temples or Beacons in Braxis Holdout. This means your teammates will have to take care of those tasks most of the time.

Versatile

Abathur can backdoor, poke enemies, scout the map, soak multiple lanes by himself, soak experience during teamfights, sneakily capture distant objectives, repair buildings, give an attack and movement speed buff, heal and shield allies, slow enemies, deal insane amounts of siege and hero damage, waste the time of enemies hunting for you, etc.

Weak Early Game

Before level 10, Abathur’s contribution to teamfights is smaller than a normal hero. Any battleground that forces teams to fight early on will put Abathur's team at a disadvantage.

Experience lead for your team

Abathur has numerous ways to soak experience from multiple lanes by himself and he is also able to soak XP while teamfighting. This can give your team the edge you need to win the game.

Can't handle a lane on his own

If there’s an enemy hero or even just a mercenary camp pushing your lane, it can be very tough to counter push. Generally you shouldn’t be alone in a lane unless there are objectives happening somewhere else at that moment.

Locust Build

Build an army of powerful Locusts that will destroy anything in a lane.

Strong points of the build:
  • Very high siege damage and experience gain
  • Can split push very effectively
  • Versatile. You can get Adrenal Overload and Calldown: MULE without messing up your build
Weak Points of the build:
  • Lower Hero damage unless the teamfights happen where your locusts are
  • You can’t really go Evolve Monstrosity or else teamfights will actually become 4v5
Variations:

Toxic Nest Build

Fill the map with powerful and rage-inducing mines. Harass and slow down the enemy team before they reach an objective, deny safe paths/bushes and get surprise kills.

Variations: Strong points of the build:
  • More impactful pre level 10 than with other builds
  • Even more vision on the map
  • High hero damage if you nail your mine placement
  • Easier to deal with mercenaries or catapults on your own
  • Help allies chase or escape enemies
Weak Points of the build:
  • Hardest build to use
  • Inconsistent damage. If the enemy predicts where your mines are, they can go around or destroy them.
  • You really can’t go for Adrenal Overload or Calldown: MULE without rendering your build ineffective
  • I don’t recommend going Evolve Monstrosity with this build either

Symbiote Build

Transform an ally of choice into an invincible killing machine. Become an amazing teamfighter.
Variations: Strong points of the build: Weak Points of the build:
  • Weak locusts can make it difficult to push or to soak lane experience
  • Harder to deal with mercenaries

Carapace Build

Transform your minion waves and Monstrosity into an unstoppable force. Heal and speed boost allies.
Variations: Strong points of the build:
  • Can make a monstrosity particularly deadly
  • Strong indirect pushing by keeping minions alive
  • Can heal teammates anywhere on the map right at the beginning of the game
Weak Points of the build:
  • Weaker hero and siege damage
  • You have to spend most of your time shielding minion waves or protecting the monstrosity instead of helping teammates to get the most value out of this build.
  • Your teamfighting capacity is very weak unless you manage to bring the Evolve Monstrosity into the teamfight
  • You can’t really go for Adrenal Overload or Calldown: MULE without making your build significantly less effective
