Intro Top

This is a guide I wrote for my friends and me. I gathered the hints and things that I like to see when I play. The builds are those that I used with my preferred characters.

History
  • 02/03/2015 : Start of the guide. General hints, heroes, maps. Builds Tassadar & Uther.

Hints Top

General

  • At the start of the game, use TAB and check the enemy team. Know what you are facing.
  • At the start of the game, split in lanes to get the maximum of experience for the team. The team fight for vision aren't really useful : Not so much experience gain, no real loss for enemy team (instant rez), impossible to capitalize of hero absence.
  • Using TAB screen, you can see the talents the enemy picked. You can see your team heroic ability cooldown too. It can be useful.
  • Heroes of the Storm have no wards or dusts. It means that is harder to have map awareness and invisibility detection. Take advantage of heroes that can do that ( Tassadar's Oracle, Tyrande's Sentinel, Zagara's Creep Tumor, etc.). Know that you can see invisible characters moving if you pay attention.
  • Don't move alone in late game.
  • Communicate with your team, by chat or by ping. Don't hesitate to tell your weakness, you'll be surprise how people react to honesty and good will.
  • Don't do mercenaries camps just to do them. If you tag the Siege camp and they're alone, they will be killed. If you solo a lane and go to a camp, you'll lose lot of time, and team will lose lot of experience. Go to camps when you have a little advantage on the enemy (after a good fight, etc). Push with your golem if you can.
  • Actually, LOOOOOOOOTS of composition can work, but we have some classics : 1 tank, 1 helper, 3 dps or 1 tank, 2 helpers, 2 dps (I didn't used words like warrior, assassin, specialist or support). Tanks are needed, often to engage the fight. They will get the enemy attention, while the DPS do their jobs. But actually, you can be stomped by a full assassin/specialist team too. :)

Fights

  • Know the focus order. If you don't kill the enemy Valla and go for the Diablo instead, they will crush your entire team easily. It's not always easy, because the tank will be there to taunt you. If you can't reach the squishy assassin, hit the tank, but as soon as the assassin is in range, your team must switch and kill. Discuss with your team.
  • Don't engage 4v5, don't engage if your team heroic ability is on cooldown.

Gold

  • Get as many lvl 5 heroes as possible to get the 500g reward. Focus on free rotation heroes.
  • You can stack 3 daily quests. It seems that you get the quest even if you don't log in the game.
  • If you want to quickly do daily quest, go in Cooperative Mode. It not really rewarding but you can quickly to the quests if you're in a rush and don't want to waste the quest.

Hints on heroes Top

Tassadar

  • Oracle is really nice. Spam it, but you want it up for some special occasions : when you enter in a lane to check the bushes, when you're going to a map objective, when you're at a map objective or doing a merc camp/golem and don't want to be surprised, etc.
  • Some people plays Mental Acuity (t2), that is really good for map awareness but I really like the Healing Ward
  • Static Charge (t3) is just THE key talent. If the enemy stays in the Psionic Storm, he will have a charge for each basic attack he gets from you !
  • Distortion Beam (t5) can be swapped for Shrink Ray. Both are good to kill enemies.
  • I used to play Second Strike (t6) but I switched to Dimensional Warp to get some survivability.

Uther

  • Conjurer's Pursuit (t1) is really nice for mana purpose.
  • Protective Shield (t2) is a good absorb when nicely landed.
  • Cleanse (t3) is the better talent here, but hard to land (i'm still learning). Don't hesitate to launch it in prevention (it immunes for 1 sec). You'll have lots to do when the team fight is started anyway. I sometimes consider using Clairvoyance when I feel it. I enjoyed using Wave of Light too.
  • Divine Storm (t4) is sooooooooooo nice ! The range can be a problem before Divine Hurricane but this heroic ability rocks ! It really helps team fights, and I can use it even for only 1 enemy if it assures the kill.
  • Sprint (t5) is really nice to get a better position / RUN. But Shrink Ray can be useful too.
  • I often go Gathering Radiance as (t6), but t6 talents are great.

Hints on maps Top

Suggested line up are "classic". They're focused on helping for map objective while keeping someone in each lane to get more XP for the team.
Of course, there can be roamers, as long as there is at least 1 hero in each lane, xp isn't wasted.
Map objectives are REALLY important. They can't be ignored.

Blackheart's Bay

  • Suggested line up : 4 top 1 bottom.
  • Chests give 5 gold.
  • Purple flags camps and merc camps give gold. Don't forget it !
  • If a teammate is handing coins, please zone ! Secure the zone, annoy the people coming, or help seeing that it's getting dangerous.

Sky Temple

  • Suggested line up : 2 top 2 mid 1 bot. To be around for the 1st temples.
  • The first temples will be top and mid. Then bottom temple will be up after.

Dragon Shire

  • Suggested line up : 1 top 1 mid 3 bot. To be close to merc camps at the bottom.
  • Map awareness is important here. Great advantage if you can "guess" who is defending a shrine, who is mid, etc.
  • Dragon Knight has bonus damage on structures, use it wisely. Don't go alone if you know that enemy team if waiting for you. Don't go without creeps to tank the tower for you or the Dragon Knight will die too quickly.
  • Again, don't rush to towers as a Dragon Knight if you're alone. It's sad when a dragon knight is wasted. Kill a minion wave while waiting for your mates, and then go !

Cursed Hollow

  • Suggested line up : 2 top 1 mid 2 top
  • There is an algorithm that can help to predict the location of the next tribute. It's a little bonus to know.
  • When enemy team is cursed, keep in mind that the lanes are now free experience, and free push. I think it's better to push than to do merc camps here.
  • When a tribute spawns, 2 schools there. Number 1 : STOP EVERYTHING AND GO CONTEST IT, it's true, it's important. Number 2 : Let the first tributes to the enemy team and stay in lane to get experience. It's true that getting a level 10 before enemies can do wonders, but you must be very confident to go to 2nd option.
  • If a team mate is taking the tribute, please zone ! Go annoy the possible enemy team that will come to avoid that. Also, don't try to tag the tribute when there is an engaged teamfight. If you want to be sneaky, you have to make them fear a little before (by killing 1 or 2 of them for example)
  • If the enemy team is at the tribute spawn, and you're not enough to contest. Don't suicide. Try to annoy a little while waiting for your team, or decide with your team to let them this tribute.
  • Taking the camps after the 2nd tribute is interesting : the enemy team will have to contest the 3rd tribute and won't be able to defend at the same time.

Garden of Terror

  • Suggested line up : 2 top 1 mid 2 top
  • At night, go at least take the little camps. Little camps worth 15 seeds, Terror worth 60 seeds.
  • Try to engage some merc camps before your team mate take the Garden Terror. The non-engaged camps disappear when the Terror appears.
  • Garden Terror can deal huge damage to heroes. Use your rootings pot safely, that the enemy team can't kill it easily. If they're not here, consider hitting the max tower/fort possible. Consider changing lane too.

Haunted Mines

  • Suggested line up : 4 on team golem lane, 1 on enemy golem lane.
  • You can tag your siege camp when enemy golem passes their tier 2 fort (the very front one, close to the middle of the map). The Siege Ogres will not be targetable and will help to kill the golem.
  • In the mine, 70 skulls are dropped by little camps and 30 by golem. Always focus on little camps, and try to split as much as possible.
  • If you can't contest the golem in mines, get out and take the bruiser camp in the middle.
  • Once the mines are open, they're open for the game. You can consider going down BEFORE the spawn of the monsters to be in place, and quickly get some skulls.
